ATTN: Sti oil filter
Sti oil filter listed in Subaru catalogue is incorrect. Cat' calls for 15208AA024/15208AA060. Correct # is 15208AA080. The 024/060 is the most common Subaru filter, but clearance to exhaust manifold on Sti is insufficient. Sti owners please make note of this. Sorry if this a repost.

Question
How can this information be confirmed? I have spoke with my local dealership and their books reference AA060 as being the correct filter. I also called SOA and they have no way to look up this information..he told me to contact my service department.
Too bad I have already changed the oil twice and have already disregarded the old oil filter.
Does anyone have the original oil filter and part number to show other wise?

I went round and round about this fact mostly because it's the same for the XT too. No one seemed to think I was right a few weeks ago when my sources said use an 80. Here are more threads on the subject,
This is where it all started for me:

Then progressed to here:

Subhuman,
Thanks for the info. I guess the SOA rep that I spokes with today 7/31/03 was not as informed as was the rep you spoke with on the 30th…weird uh?
My concerns are the specs with the OE AA024 compared to the quoted and “CONFIRMED” AA080 filter. So the specs for the bypass valve opening and the surface area are the same, correct?
Peaty,
Thank you for your diligence..I see you have been busy looking into this.

It's a little more cut and dry for me because they stated outright that the Forester and Baja turbo need to have the smaller filter. Even in the service manual. The ambiguity comes from the fact that they didn't put the STi in the same bulletin.
When I called around to ask for the filters locally, none of the 3 parts departments were aware there was a new filter. When I quoted the bulletin they looked it up and said, I guess there is we'll have to order some, one place did have them though so I got 3 plus I orderd 6 on line from Subie Gal. I should be good to go for a while
A friend of mine w/ an STi was there when they did the first oil change and he had the 80 on there from the factory. He's the one that took the pics for me.

The o-ring diameter is the only dimension that appears to be the same. The base of the 024/060 is pointed out and the 080 is concave or pointed in. The bypass appears different and the volume would be smaller in the 080. The name on the 080 is Tokyo Roki co. Ltd . and is black in color. The 024/060 will work in a pinch, but should be replaced with the correct 080.
I would like to know what the consequences are if you use the 060. I have had 2 oil changes so far at different dealers. Both said all they know of is the 060, so that is what I have.

I'm not exactly sure since there have been so many things flying around as to why the new filter is needed. The one thing I heard that sounded reasonable is the larger filter (80mm VS 68mm) sits too close to the header and can start the oil boiling (?). I also read about the flow being restricted due to the way the one has a concave VS convex base. Not sure about that though, if that were the case I think the oil light would come on.
