2.0L vs. new 2.5L
OK, laugh at me if you want but i have been reading some other web site forums and they are all complaining about the 2.5L in the new STi... They say that the 2.0L is much better and i don't understand why that is. Isn't the bigger the better? If anyone can help me on this hit me up!
Here is a poll... Tell me which of you would rather have seen the 2.0L in the new STi or favor the new 2.5L

Next, do you really think we got shafted? Think about this. We have more grunt in the low end because of the higher displacement. The 2.0 has less power than the 2.5 at lower RPMs until the turbo kicks in. The turbo lag is lower than the WRX obviously, but before it kicks in, it still has less power than the 2.5l. The motor also might have a the capability of handling higher chamber pressures. (ie it could handle bigger better, badder turbos) We also get past the emmissions regulations that the US and especially the CA govt requires with the 2.5l. If we get the 2.0l we also might have run into the hp situation of the EVO VIII with the lower octane fuel offered here. Would you like to have a 260hp Sti instead of a 300hp Sti? Note also that a 2.0l engine that has 280hp sqeezed out of it is much less efficient than a higher disp engine that outputs 280hp. It burns fuel more efficiently and this translates into improved fuel economy with literally no reduction in performance. You can't try to squeeze 300hp out of a 2.0l engine and have it efficiently burn fuel. Why do you think the twin-scroll turbo system was introduced in the 2.0l in Japan? To make the 2.0l engine as efficient as it can be without increasing the disp.. We don't need the twin scroll system with a higher disp engine. I don't know too much about twin scroll turbos, but on the Garett site, they have a pic of the twin scroll system and it looks more complicated than a regular turbo. This might mean that it is heavier and more expensive. Point is that there is much more to the debate over the engine types than the comparison of power output.

320 ps is the special limited edition S 202
400 units built
best STi ever.
super light. super powerful.
running all STi optional parts and who knows what boost.
but!!!
that doesn't qualify for US Emission standard and Crash standard..
if we screw the standards then run same parts and same boost w/ the 2.5 we ll get 600 PS
J/K
at least 360-380.

the 2.0 has a TWin scroll turbine..
up is that it has much better power band. especially on the low end.
down is that (from Jpn) it kills the well beloved "boxer beat".
2.5 prolly won't get hte twin scroll .. but we still get better power while retaining that boxer beat....
in fact.. i personally get so excited listening to that boxer note.
and who doens't?
Evo running the twin scroll barely pass US exhaust standard..
there is prolly a slight chance that evo won't pass smog! lol...

Rich, I got this from your post. This is proof of what the 2.5l can do. Those who aren't sure of the 2.5l, take a look at this site. This car is running on 23psi of boost!!!!!!!! The output is 600PS and 494 lb-ft of torque.

First of all, they're not just taking any ol' 2.5 and slapping a snail on it. The US STi will have forged internals and what not like the 2.0L and a semi-closed deck. I'm not sure what a "semi-closed" deck is, and while I'd certainly prefer "totally closed," "semi-closed" sounds like it's better than open deck.
I think the poll question misses the mark. The real question is, "Since nobody has been able to get 300HP out of a 2.0L engine and pass EPA muster, would you rather have a watered-down 2.0L STi like they have in the UK, or would you rather have a 2.5L STi that performs the way Subaru intended for the STi to perform?" Given those two choices, I'd rather have the 2.5L. If you want watered-down 2.0L, the Mitsu dealer is just down the road. At least this way we don't have to choose between two watered-down 2.0L cars. I wish we could get a 300HP 2.0, but when you can't get there from here, it's time to take a different route. That route is a 2.5.
As for the claim that the JDM STi puts out 320HP, that's subject to some debate. According to SPD Tuning, "[w]e have put crate 1999-2000 EJ207 STI engines on a dyno with 100 octane gas and pulled a very easy 340hp with no modifications." Can five extra octane with no other changes account for the 65HP difference between the "official" rating and SPD's results? I'm not sure but I don't think so. (SPD's website implies that the 100 octane was according to the U.S. rating method, while the U.S. method puts Japanese high-octane gasoline at about 95 octane.) When you look at the weight and performance numbers of the JDM STi, two and two does not add up to 276HP. Those cars are obviously underrated. Same with the Evo VII.

the 2.0l you speak so highly off needs octanes that are not available here and will not pass US emissions. If you allow the 2.5 to run the same octane and emission standards then of course output will far exceed 320hp..
in other words we got a great deal--be happy!
