trunk rattling badly, help!!
hello, ive just installed a layer of dynamat xtreme, thinking that it would at least reduce some rattle, but comes out to be almost similar as when i didn't have it in my trunk .. has anyone found the solution to not make the trunk rattle?
Hey - For me (02 WRX Sedan) I actually filled most of my trunk (door/decklid and the shelf behind the seats) with "Great Stuff." That's the stuff in the can that expands. It worked wonders for me. It's kind of redneck, but it worked. Just make sure it doesn't come out of any holes.
my trunk is rattling badly too... i have it rammated on the trunk floor, trunk lid, and trnuk walls yet it still sounds horrible from the outside. i think it's the lid rattling against the bumper...
could work im trying it out my self and will post pics later.

My trunk rattles also... and yes sounds horrible from the outside. At the moment me and my friend are trying to create a sub box which uses the center arm rest hole and have the subs face into the car rather than in the trunk because the sound was horrible!! Will show pics once its all up and running !
still rattles
after stuffing my trunk like a turkey with insulation, lowered the trunk latch for a tighter fit and dynamated the top section of the trunk.
maybe i need the whole trunk dynamated, the rattling sounds like its coming from the locking latch on the trunk and maybe the wing.
but anyway he are pic of my install, im running a JL 500 watt mono block amp and a 10" L7 kicker. its not bad for a 10 inch people think i have a 12 inch

I think the problem with subs on the sedan is manifold:
1) It does help to fill the trunklid itself (with spray foam, liquid sound deadening, fiberglass home insulation), and then once this is completed, to seal-off the inner surface of the trunklid with a dynamat-type layer.
2) There needs to be a vent for the "bass" to get into the cabin:
>The WRX owner has the option of pulling-down the rear center armrest, as long as free air can get into the cabin through that opening (I.E. having a sub/amp enclosure and/or mounting that blocks this pass-through will negate the purpose of doing this)
>The STi owner has fewer options: The rear seat can have holes drilled into the rear seatback foam and the barrier plate can be drilled-through as well, but this will likely look like crap.
I found that there was a hole in the sheetmetal of the rear deck, by the rear driver's side, and had a hole cut into the hat tray, and had a round speaker grille installed there. I had a rectangular MDF tunnel installed in between this hole, sealed to the underside of the sheetmetal rear deck, going down into the box in which I have one JL audio 10w2 v3
The next step I need to make is to apply dynamat the upper and lower surfaces of the sheetmetal rear deck surfaces.

I've recently discovered another source of rattle coming from the rear of my 05 STI that may be mistaken for trunk rattle.
If you pull out the carpet on either side of the trunk interior you will be able to see the bare metal from the rear quarter panels. If you look lower down that panel you will see an air duct about 4" x 5." On the backside of the duct is a rubber flap. For me, there was extreme vibration coming from those flaps on either side of the trunk when the sub was hitting.
The fix: I ripped out the rubber flaps and it SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the amount of rattle from the rear area. Though my trunk itself still rattles, the overall noise has been reduced by a lot due to pulling those rubber flaps out.
I was concerned at first that those flaps kept dust and water out of the trunk area, but my trunk interior has been fine since I pulled them out.
Hope this helps some ppl.
