Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows the results of taking a 2 way speaker and cutting the wires connected to the tweeter; will this in effect make a woofer only unit?

Also; I was wondering if anyone has ever tried or would try to install 6.5" speakers in the rear doors reversed; with the magnet towards the grills and the face screwed to the door? I suppose that if it fit and it was a sub it would be ok but a 2 or 3 way...? any and all options/opinions are appreciated.

yes. only if the tweeters are wired in parallel to the midbass or woofer. if they are wired in series then you have to rewire for the midbass or woofer.

well yes that's doable, but remember, the sound is NOW going towards the door. and that is just wasted energy.

if you read my previous posts here, my formula is

* get the biggest and baddest front speakers.
* get the biggest and baddest amp to power said front speakers.

then add a subwoofer that is also the biggest and baddest you can afford and willing to give up space for.

there you go, a stereo setup. who cares about the rear doors? unless the rear passengers are paying you for music, then forget them!

I now have the Wagon as of (05/30) and after checking out the acoustics; I 100% undersatnd your formula and agree that this is the route to follow! As far as the rear passengers are concerned (my 11 Month old son) he is too young to be a critic... Lol!

that's the formula in the car audio world, screw rear fill, spend all the money on an amp and niiice front speakers and a sub. and to answer your questions, don't turn anything but a subwoofer backwards, and if you cut the tweet wire on a 2 way speaker it's impedence would change and that could be a bad thing or not for the amp depending on how it's wired, i wouldn't recommend it.

I installed my HU this weekend (KDC-MP4028) but didn't have the time to do the front door 6.5's.
I had a hard time getting the door handle off of the door panel and didn't want to break anything in a rush. I will bo going out this week end to find either a 6.5" bass bazooka or a Kenwood KSC-SW1 to mount under the seat.

there's a screw you have to remove from the door handle before popping off the entire door panel.

also, you need to make or buy spacers since subaru uses the goofy 3 hole mounting method for their speakers.

I have fabricated some spacers out of MDF and I will be doing the install on Sunday. The problem that I had with the panel was getting the trim piece off around the door handle (with the clips on the inside) I will try to not break anything!
The HU install went really smooth and took about 20 minutes including soldering the wires on the plug in adapter, I need to rewire it as I will probably be picking up an amplified sub and I will use the HU to power just the front speakers. I am easily tempted to go "over board" so I will try my best not to go crazy like I have in the past...

When I pull the door panels off I remove all the screws and pop all the pop clips loose around the door and then gently pull the panel away from the door and the trim around the door handle will pop off without any drama...

 

you noticed how easy is it to R&R the head unit. scary actually...

i had to replace my HU with an exact model (long story) but i did it in the parking lot (during a 10 minute break) and i think it took longer to put the cup holder back in.... lol....

i got lazy and picked up this wiring harness that plugs into the regular wiring harness that then plugs into the car side. this harness has the plugs that plugged into my sony HU and then a universal connector.

that way no butt splices (or soldering) at all. kinda nifty actually.

 

Actually the impedance would not be effected. The amplifier produces power across the whole range of frequencies. Speakers however do not.

The woofer and tweeter work together and one picks up where the other leaves off. If you remove one you only loose the range of frequencies that the particular speaker plays. The impedance whoever stays the same, typically 4-ohms.

Removing the tweeter is OK to do as long as you do not want to here the high frequency.

Also inverting a speaker is fine to do if you just want midbass and nothing else. Sound is produced from both sides of the speaker but mid and high frequencies are more directional then lower frequencies and radiate more from the front of the speaker then the back.
