Stereo swap.....
Hi all,
(yeah, I can't spell "stereo"!)
First off, I'm a car audio know-nothing. I trust that there is a wealth of info here though
I'm wondering if my factory 6-disk unit will easily swap into my wife's '99 Legacy (Outback) wagon. I want to use an i-pod in my car, and am hoping that I can run it through the stock amp (that came with the "stereo upgrade").
I figure that if I had her 1 disk head unit for the Impreza so that I'd have a radio, the i-pod would be fine for the rest.
So, is this a fesible plan? Am I kidding myself?
Thanks in advance!!!

i-pod as in Apple I-Pod? if that is the case, your plan won't work, you can't just plug a pda into an amplifier and have it work
as much as we all wish. My brother did something similar with his Civic... He had a Kenwood deck and bought an adapter so he can plug his laptop in with a simple male to male headphone cable.

your radios should swap out fine since they are both subaru cars, but they don't have an input built into them for the ipod to hook up to. Some new aftermarket radios have inputs for mp3 players, dvd players and other things like that. Or you could probably use an rf adaptor like the ones that make an aftermarket cd changer work on a stock radio. RF adaptors can be bought at parts express and other online companies...

Actually I'm trying to do the same swap (without the ipod)between the changer and my '97 Legacy. So the speaker/power/antena plugs are consistant thru the years/models? I know the base unit on both is Panasonic made so I'm hoping it is.

Your I-Pod will play all 30 Gigs through your radio. All you need is the FM Transmiter that they sell for the I-Pod. Just tune your radio to the preset I-Pod frequency and it will play all your music through that station. I use my I-Pod just like your trying to. I never have one CD in my car. Just about 300 CDs worth of music in the 30Gig I-Pod... its cool. I have subs and an amp hooked up too so all my music bumps.
