Removing tar
Removing tar
Ok, Stupid question, whats the easiest way to remove tar? Specifically the tar on the doors that holds in that plastic sheet?
I just got Raam Mat and went to install it, but first needed to take of the plastic sheet that covered the door. THis was held on with this really sticky tar stuff. I tried scraping it off and got some, and found what worked best for me of what I have is enine deagreaser, but it still took/takes forever. I spent 2-3 hours cleaning 1 door!? very annoying. The deagreaser made it come off kinda easy, but went 1 layer at a time so I had to keep wiping it off and so it was like 2 paper towels or 200 seperate applyings of the deagreaser and wiping it off to actually get it.
Hopefully someone can give me a better way of doing this cuz after 30mins it got kinda annoying.
Thanks

Go to any Kragen or Autozone and look in the cleaner section. There's tons of stuff. My favorite are the paint prep items. 3M makes a great paint prep in a spray can, works better than any other "goo gone/ goof off" type of product i've seen.
remember to wax afterwards.

I shall try them when I get to the next door, I'm kinda slow, 2 days and I haven't even finnished the first door yet (finnished removing the tar but not deadening it
)
Pyro: do you have a specific one in mind? aren't carb cleaners the same as engine cleaners?
Thanks

I think that stuff is called butyl tape. It should stick to itself nicely, so try to pick a little bit off, then kinda snowball it, if you know what I mean. Once you get the bulk of it off, clean the residue with the solvent.
Hope this saves you some time

Old school bug and tar remover worked very well for me on this stuff but as you noticed with degreaser it sorta needs to be rubbed a few times if its really thick.

Actually mine is
, not that I care much about the paint, but I'd just assume it stay where it is. I'll try it anyways though, can't wait to get to the next door
