Old thread but some may still be looking. +2 for the rx65. The newer ones are not much (if any better) but may have a data base for dangerous places (read as heavily enforced - cherry patches in the sworn vernacular )

Overall radar detectors are useless. Those laser, lidar guns can detect you fast. Once your radar detector, sets off. Its already too late. If anything, its about getting laser jammers. I know they are illegal, so your best result is to not speed.

They aren't exactly useless. The sheriffs here use K-Band all the time and you'll encounter a lot of KA still making LA road trips via 5 or 101. Now if they're sitting yeah, you're screwed.

I've seen in a bunch of places that they are really useful, but others I've seen they are useless.. Which is it?

I use a valentine 1, you can call them up and ask for a refurbish one and its 100$ cheaper.

Its saved me multiple times. Yes its useless against laser, but I try to look to the sides to see if there are any campers if I speed. Atleast it gives me notice when I get hit by a laser so that I can decelerate and not just keep going fast. I got hit by laser at night by a highway patrol going 100, he had his lights off on the left side of the freeway, but I noticed him as soon as my valentine went off and I proceeded to decelerate/go over a lane, and he didnt chase me
