Rockford isn't what it used to be. JL audio, Orion are very good brands. I have Polk Momo equiptment in my car and am very happy with it. I built fiberglass door panels with 6 1/2 components in the front and rear doors with 2 momo 10's. I'm running everything on a Orion 8002 and a 4004
Alot of car stereo places are dropping RF because they lost alot of quality in their products. Wal-mart is beginning to sell RF if that's any clue to their quality. You can't go wrong with Boston Acoustic, MQ Quart, Eclipse, some Alpine products (the high end stuff is good, obviously.) Depending on your budget, 150-200 is a good range with componet speakers. A good effecient amp is Jl Audio, as well as their subs, and they won't cost you too much I've got the eclipse 8443 HU with Boston Acoustic SL60 comp. and a Phoenix Gold Amp and a Alpine V12 Amp with a JL sub. I use the stock rear speakers just for some mid bass. Just don't skimp on the wiring. You can have all the high end parts put without quality interconnects and wiring, it will sound bad. You'll spend about 100-200 on that by itself. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll try not to write a book next time.

what do you think? how good will these speakers sound without an amp, or does it matter? and about the sub, do you have one or two, and does it make a difference to have two? i know i'm definitely going to have to save for the sub and amp after i buy a pair of speakers for the front and rear

From: Are you too one of the few still living the past? Well I can change that! With a simple wicket. Yes, my friend, a wicket. PM for details.
Car Info: No car right now....sob.
I don't have any experience with those Polk's, but they usually have a good reputation. I think we are affiliated with them somehow, too. Check, and you might get a discount or something.
They look pretty good. To bad the tweeter doesn't come off so you can mount it in the stock tweeter location for better sound staging. If you can afford it, makes sure you run 14-18 guage speaker wire from the components to the amp, they charge more if they have to run new wire from the doors to the body instead of splicing in from inside the body, but it is really worth it. You will notice a huge difference in in sound quality.
