Mounting a sub in the rear deck? possible, opinions?
Alright, here is my situation.I have an 02 wrx. I recently got rid of my 2 12" infinity kappa perfects in a big *** box. It weighed around 75 pounds and was more than I needed. I have moved on to 1 10" eclipse dvc aluminum sub. now here is my thinking. If i remove my third brake light in the rear deck I have room..around 12 inches...to mount this sub. Could i relocate the wires, cut out the shape from the aluminum underneath and simply dynamat under where I screw the sub into, and then use it as sort of a "bandpass" box. My reasoning is 1) bass right in the cabin 2) no trunk space lost 3) I think it would look damn sweet. HOwever Im not sure about sound quality if I were to attempt this. Ideas, thoughts, rants, any opinions welcome.
I was thinking along similar lines for my upcoming install. The thing that turned me away, which your bandpass box might solve, is i wanted to avoid direct sunlight onto the woofer surround. Other than that, it might just be the ticket for you.

True, however, a few other things have been hacked up that will no longer be able to be replaced...doorpanels for speakers and such, so, im really starting to think this might be a good idea.

I think you can do it but isn't going to be easy. It looks like alot of work. the other thing is if you go to sell the car it might turn people away having the rear deck hacked up.

Alright I'm going to build a enclosure for the trunk but I have a question. When i went to my eclipse manual and here are the stats...FS 26Hz... .47QT....VAS 2.10 Cubic feet. I am very very confused, I ran this through a program I found and it recomended
1.7cubic feet of air space.
That doesnt sound right. My old 12" infinity's only needed 1.0 cubic feet each. Right now the eclipse is in a .7cubic foot box and only soudns ok. Anyone answer my question?

Perhaps your state is different, but since it is a U.S. DOT requirement, its probably ubiquitously required to keep a 3rd brake light. Meaning... its a sure fire way to get pulled over. Its very noticable. So if you car looks hopped up any way (e.g. exhaust) the 3rd brake light is a fine excuse for an officer to pull you over.

I'd recommend building a box and porting it through you deck lid. Less cutting involved and you can proabably keep that brake light.
Sounds really nice. Heard one in a vette like that and was gonna get my civic done like that with a couple 10's.
Your cubic foot requirement is just a matter of sub style. Some are meant for smaller sealed enclosures..some larger ported. Like you can use a JL 10 in like .7 cubic feet sealed.
Always check stats and purchase subs with what you plan to do in mind.
As for your deck lid idea...check a BMW m5 if you can find one....even check out a dealership if you want.....they have subs hanging from the deck lid.

To be honest, I have never heard a inifinite baffle ('free air') sub set up that sounded decent... YMMY. You could go with a tube in the trunk, that would minimize both weight and trunk usage. The idea of mounting speakers in the rear deck is something I want to do though, not so much for bass but I am thinking that 6 1/2's in the rear deck would sound a lot better than stock speakers in the bottom of the rear doors.
