Ugly pocket you get when you replace stock deck with a Single DIN deck
I recently replaced my stock deck with a single DIN alpine deck. The ugly plastic pocket under my deck sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm pretty sure most of you who have replaced your deck also have something similar in your dash... it's a good way to ruin an otherwise attractive interior. Here's my solution... A machined Aluminum plate with the WRX logo cut into it, sized to fit over that pocket and held in with fasteners. I'm looking to get a batch made, but I'm curious as to how much interest there is for them. Initial qoutes for manufacturing suggest that I'd have to sell them for around $40 plus shipping to make it worthwhile. Let me know if any of you are interested. Here's a pic...

I'm working with a machine shop to get one made for pictures and to test fit. If I change the material to brushed Stainless Steel instead of aluminum, the costs should go down a bit. like all small production pieces, the more I can order the cheaper they will be, that's why I'm on here trying to find out how much interest there is.

the way i have it designed is this... there are two plates, each one about an 1/8 inch thick. one of them has the wrx logo cut out of it, the other one is solid. whoever buys one can pain the backing plate whatever color they want in the area behind the logo. I picked blue for the graphic because it stands out good.

I would be interested in one of those things. Especially if i could choose what color the letters would be. I drive a red WRX, which i know is uncommon, so i would rather have a sort of red color to match the car. Besides, i think the blue would stand out too much on the silver dash. But i think red or black would look pretty good. Thats just my input but i am interested.

Here is what i am gonna do
I just got my head unit.. didn't install it yet and I was thinking the same thing about what to do with that space. I am a Machinist so I have alot of options here.. I was thinking something like this...
Get 2 peices of plastic(semitrasparent plastic such as Ultem)
Make them to sice to fit in that gap
The first peice is just going to be blank so it looks solid
The second peice is going to have lettering on it(thinking "WRX")
the letters are going to be actually holes going through the plastic
The second peice with the lettering is going to go behind the first peice so it looks like just a plain peice of plastic
Now what I want to do is install some kind of light beheind both plastic peices so that when its turned on.. You can read the "WRX" through the plastic
I think that would look really cool.. looks plain untill you turn the light on and then you can see it.. let me know what you guys think of this.. will also let you know when I get around to doing it.. might be a week or so.. still waiting for my rear speakers to come in before I hook everything up.

Ultem... yeah use Ultem.
Sorry, had to put the plug in. I work for GE, used to work at Plastics.
Tinted Lexan would also be a nice option.
Let me know if you do it, I'd like to see the results... I might be interested.

that looks great, I'd be willing to pay $20, maybe $30 for something like that, I dont know what costs are involved in making it, but thats just what I think it would be worth to me....I do love the way it looks though
