What do you guys think about the stock WRX deck?
Have you replaced it with an aftermarket one? Why?
Let's hear the positives, negatives, etc...

I replaced mine with a nice Alpine 9813 and the front speakers with Focal components. It sounded AWESOME after that, far better than stock. Then on that infamous saturday when taco bell gave me a cup with a lid that wasn't on all the way, i got some mountain dew in the Alpine, scarring it for life. I put the stocker back in. With the better speakers in the car, it still sounded much better than stock. I'm going to stick with the stocker, less theft attraction, more cd's, etc... The biggest drawback to the stock sound system is the front speakers and crossover.

What do you mean by the crossover?

I have the stock deck, sony xplode 800w amp (fits cleanly under pass seat), sony titanium fronts with split tweeter, and a kicker 12" box in the trunk.
I will be changing deck some day as well as adding aftermarket rears....
But it still sounds good

well, the wrx with stock component speakers have really crappy crossovers. That's what sends the high frequencies to the tweeters, and the lower frequencies to the drivers.
have diamond audio components/amp and jl audio sub/amp running off the stock deck. with a navone LOC, it sounds good. i don't really believe in EQ's because i feel they are made to "mask" the sound to accentuate/omit frequencies. give me warm vocals, punctuated by crisp highs and gut-pounding lows...ALL without an EQ, and i'll be happy.
RussB also hit the nail right on the head...aftermarket decks attract unwanted attention.

I'm happy with my stock setup. It's definitely mediocre as far as stereo systems go, but it sounds good enough for me and I like having the option of playing one of my old cassettes. I really like having a stock stereo in my car as I've had a number of aftermarket head units stolen in my life time. Seems like the thieves are more interested in the aftermarket units.
FWIW, I got the package which came with upgraded speakers and a little sub under the passenger seat.

did you measure it to be 6db? with certain types of music (primarily music that doesn't REQUIRE an inordinate amount of bass,) the 6db boost may not be too big a deal.
in the end, it's all a matter of value system. is the flat spectrum worth the money and risk (of theft)?

Great replies.
Does anyone know if I can have my Clarion 9575ZR CD-Player and my stock subaru cd player installed and working at the same time?
I really like the stock flush look that the WRX has to offer.
