Installing Viper 791XV
Hey everyone. Got a quick question about viper alarm systems. I have a 5 year old one in my wrx. (I had it in another car and transfered it to my wrx). I want to upgrade and get either the 5000 or 791XV series. I would rather install it myself for 1)the fun, and 2) to save money. Since I already have an older Viper system, is it pretty much plug and play? Can I just swap out the old sensors and brain unit with the new ones? I know it's going to void the warranty, but that's worth the risk for me (plus, I don't really want 'strangers' installing an alarm system in my car). Any thoughts?
Hope everyone enjoys the superbowl! Thanks for your help!

Nope.....not true. There are many dei alaram systems that use similar if not the same plug. If they are the same plug, then I have never seen one that was pinned differently. For example, the older 600 and 800 series alarms shared many plugs, but the 800 series had two or more channels than the 600. Both used the same push button, led plug, valet switch, back up battery plugs, remote start add on pieces, window mod plugs(520 and others)...and so on. If you have a 560xv then all yuo have to do swith the brain and antenna of a 791xv and presto!....instant 2-way upgrade with little or no labor.
HOWEVER!... The 791xv and similar are two way alarms. They are different in a couple of ways. The newer alarms use a different relay pack for remote start(smaller and easier for a beginner and or a best buy installer...he he... to hook up). The two way alarms still use similar switches and harness as the rest of the dei lineup, but the antennae is very different and I think as old as your alarm is that the harness plug may be a little longer on the new one....can't remember. If I was donig it, I would find the install book for the old and new alarms and compare wiring diags. If your a noob, then I strongly suggest getting it installed at your local tweeter (<- shameful plug) as even after six years of doing it, I still get surprised by one and may have to diode isolate a wire and many other fun-fun random problems.
Hope it helps
