building box for 2 tens
i bought 2 rockford fosgate punch 10s off a friend and im trying to decide what kind of box to make for them. would a sealed box sound better than a ported one? ive been thinking about making individual boxes so if i need more trunk room i can just pull one out, would this sound any different than a dual box? also, i can get both half inch and 3/4" acx plywood from work for free, would it sound ok or should i just buy some mdf? -Adam

1)would a sealed box sound better than a ported one?
yes, in terms of sound quality, plus if its your first box, it will be way easier to build than messing with port diameter/length/placement/angles. a ported box is louder, but lacks the quick response of a sealed box.

this will work, just have a way to fasten them together to get good sound imaging. it wont sound any different thatn a single box, because a single box should be chambered for each sub.
3)also, i can get both half inch and 3/4" acx plywood from work for free, would it sound ok or should i just buy some mdf?
use 3/4" MDF, no doubt about it. it will sound better, and will last WAY longer than plywood.

i dont understand what you mean by imaging. as long as their polarity isnt reversed couldn't you hypothetically have the subs on opposite sides of the trunk and still sound normal?

All i got to say is the box should be ported. I have had both closed and ported boxes. Both had 2 12's in them. The ported box thumped like a motha f'er. It just hit soo much harder than the closed box. Not sure why but it did and that is what my 2 JL 12 W3v2's are in.
if one sub is closer to the rear trunk lid than the other, the sound waves will reflect at different times, and when they reach your ears they will be out of tune with eachother, canceling out sound.
"It(the ported box) just hit soo much harder than the closed box." this is true, but the sound quality is lower, granted, not by a whole lot, but it is still lower, and the subs wont hit as fast, if you listen to music with fast bass beats. also, a ported box is way harder to build, so if its the first time building one, then you might want to just go with sealed, then fool around with a ported box and compare each then design a little more into the ported box until it sounds way better than the sealed.

hey dude might as well make your as well make your own box. plus u need the right dimensions to make the subs sound good so i suggest not buyin it offa ebay. use 3/4 mdf and do it yourself. just look it up on the internet

in terms of power, it takes more power to drive subs in a sealed box and make them sound good than it does subs in a ported box. the reason ported boxes sound louder than sealed boxes is because in a ported box, both halves of the sound wave leave the box, while in a sealed box only half of the sound wave leaves the box.

so far i think ive decided on two sealed boxes. ive got a 12 that is in a sealed box right now and i like how tight it sounds inside the car. outside the car you cant hear it at all, which i like. thanks for all the advice, now i just gotta figure out how to get a sheet of mdf home. -adam
