The best way to get bumpin' in my ride?
Hi guys,
I'm building the sound system for my just purchased '98 OBS.
So far, I have a JVC SX990 HU (plays mp3s, yay!), 6.5" infinity components in the front and 4" infinities in the rear doors.
I'm powering the four main speakers with a Haffler (basically an older rockford fosgate) amp.
So ... it sounds great, but I've got no bumps!
I plan to add another amplifier for one or two 10" subs. I'd be willing to spend around $200-250 on the amp.
My HU has four preamp outs going to the Haffler. What is the best way to get signal to the sub amp?
If I only run one preamp to the Haffler, can it still power all four speakers (front and rears)?
Whatever amp I choose, I need some kind of remote control or power switch, so I can turn off the bass at will.

yeah i have the exact same speakers and problem you have. I was thinking of getting a single JL 10w3 in a sealed box with a coresponding amp to power it. my friend with a GTI has this and his system sounds great. i think he has a fostgate amp.

My suggestion to you would be to go to your local Radio Shack and purchace RCA splitter adapters. Not real sure what they are called, just basically a 1 to 2 "Y" type RCA. Just split them from the 'REAR' input on the exsisting amp. Should do the trick. Will try to find a pic of the adapter and post.
most HU's have a dedicated subwoofer output that you can turn off in the options menu in the deck. i know my girlfriends lower mid-end JVC has it, so i would assume that yours does too, but not positive. i would run a dedicated amp for your "bumps" and a seperate 4-channel for your speakers. you need all four preouts for front-rear speakers going into your speaker amp(s). you can just use the rear outputs for your sub amp, and that would allow you to turn off the subs, just fade all the way to the front. a lot of amps also have a remote gain control, so you can pretty much turn off the bass.

My HU does not have a third set of preamp outs for a sub. I wish it did
I do have two preamp outs (front and rear). Are they outputting the exact same signal?
One thought - I could buy a crosssover/eq to mount in the dash. That would take 1 rca in from the HU leaving the other one unused. The crossover/eq could then split the signal into front/rear/sub with 3 pairs of RCAs going to the two amps (front/rear on one and sub on the other). The problem there is the crossover/eq is an added $200 or so.
I'm starting to think this is my only option if I keep the Haffler. Since it doesn't have a crossover built in, I'm going to need something to keep the bass from going to my main speakers.

the eq will work, it wont be the best way to go about things though. im not bashing your deck, you can make it work, but to have a full soundstage and really get the best out of your music, you need a deck with a non-fading subwoofer pre-out. that way you can get just what is supposed to be delivered to all of your speakers.

I'm wishing that I had bought a deck with a third set of preamp outs ... but I still like my deck (2 aux inputs, plays mp3s, etc).
I understand the difference between left and right channels. I'm wondering about the difference between front and rear.
Which pair should the sub go on if I don't get an EQ/crossover?

so if I send the rears to the sub, where does the crossover go? I need to filter bass from the front/rears and send bass to the sub

it depends on what kind of crossover you have, if you can put in the rears as inputs then run off the crossover on highpass to the rear speakers, then off the lowpass to your amp, that would be best, most crossovers have adjustable points, and if you adjusted them the way you want, you wont get any bass to the speakers, it would all go out the low pass side to the amp and subs

Ok, here is my plan.
I will use two RCA y splitters on the rear outs from the deck. One set goes to the rears on the 4-channel, and one set will go to the input on a mono or 2 channel sub amp with a built in crossover.
On the four main speakers, I will solder in some cheap filters to keep them from putting out too much bass.
Sound good?

You can pick up a switch cheap at Radio Shack to cut the power to your switched power input. If you make a little hole in the console you have an easy way to shut off the amp.

I'm kind of looking at one of these Rockford Fosgate amps: Power 351S or 351M
They have a wired remote to control the bass. I'm not sure yet if it is worth the extra $50 for the wired remote models, or if I should just run a switch to the dash.
I would like to have the option of removing the subs from the trunk (leaving the amp under the seat and speaker wire in place), so maybe the kill switch would be a better idea ...
