I think the first two suggestions were the best... seriously... Oh and maybe a mixed CD of Journey, Styx, and Rush as well...
Even more seriously, I know I'm a stranger, so take my advice with a grain of salt if you will, but I think most of us (men) actually like getting things you "think" we'd like... even if we don't really like it, we'll love it cuz it's from you and it's cute that you are trying to get us. The thing is, we are simple to please... The part you don't hear is how much we appreciate you for thinking we are more sophisticated...

Don't get him whatever that he is really into it. My friend got me gundam models before... which are the one I don't like.
My other friend tried to get me hiking stuff by giving me a big5 gc... which I don't go. And for my birthday... everyone decide to give me pocket knifes... which I ended up to have like 5 of them... which I only use the one I bought. So ya... if he is into video game, don't buy him video games (unless you know which one he wants)... if he is into comic, don't buy him comics... that sort of deal.
