i do agree it is awesome, when it works. Its going to take a few years before we get something like that for LA, I mean NY/SF has a pretty awesome system, of course its not like Tokyo
the problem is the existing public transportation doesn't really serve us that well. It takes more time trying to get on the public transportation than driving our asses in traffic

Many cities are following the actions made by others such as charging a toll to enter a city with a private car unless a resident.
Public transportation in Tokyo is great, in the city each train stop basically puts you in a roughly 10 to 20 minute walk to where you need to be. Each stop is roughly 10 city blocks away from each other (JR, TM, Tobu, Keio, etc).
When Kenji815 goes to JAP-land for the first time, he'll know why I liked it so much.
Owning a car is not necessary unless you live in the sticks.

I have to give it up to Bay area for actually using public transportation because when compared to LA, ours is a joke.

right even the trains in LB are actually pretty good. Every stop in downtown puts you 5 minute walk away from anything over there. Imagine if there was something like that everywhere?
Never worry about parking your car, never worry about driving home drunk.

actually, they were planning to extend BART to San Jo, but teh environmentalists and locals blocked it. It might be similar if LA decides to extend their "mass" transit. Maybe an earthquake here is in order.
