I would not add too much stuff to the console. After seeing the fan assembly, it appears that this fan functions on efficient air flow.
The cold air is drawn in from the center and blown outward along the outer edge of the fan blades.

See the lower vents (on the side and under) is the secondary intake vent. Drawing air into these vents not only feeds the fan but also get air into the core system.

I would spend the 3 dollars or so for the pads to lift the console up. This allows that bottom vent to breath and circulate the air to the fan from two side instead of one. After my cd rom died (suspect heat soak) I set mine up vertically so the heat could escape instead on being trapped in the cd drive.

Home Depot. I think you are better off placing it vertically than horizonal. At least the heat will go straight up into the air instead of going into the cd rom.

I notice a drop in the exhaust temps and the fan seems to be running lower rpm (I think).

I'll put my IR heat gun to record the temps.

But I thought when you stand it up vertically the CD rom is at the top..

Up and down like a tower.

Blue cool intake air.
Orange heat soak.
Red heat from fan exhaust.

Horizonal promotes heat soak to cd. Vertical allows heat to naturally rise away from cd.

The foot pad allows the lower vents circulate air to fan.
