I personally like custom made ones through a manufacturer if possible. It cuts the middle men, plus gives you the flexibility to add/remove what you want. IIRC, Lenovo's website allows you to "downgrade" (I consider an upgrade) to XP from Vista which will save you tons of headaches.

Yes, Vista = terrible and avoid at all costs.

Almost all companies now give preinstalled and I know Dell has a reset tool. For example, my Dell, you can reset it back to factory specs, so you lose everything on the hard drive and all software is reset to how it was when it was shipped to me. I'm sure Lenovo has installed a similar thing, and even though Dell has that installed, I called and they said they wouldn't send it to me. So I had to make up BS excuses about wanting to partition the HD and stuff and the only way to do that is with a Windows CD, so they did that.

I've been running Vista for a few months through Parallels and haven't had a single issue. Provided it's not my primary platform (and thus, I don't use it for more than Office 07), can I ask out of ignorance why does it suck?

Ah - so this is something that I assume would be fixed after some time once Vista becomes predominant and XP is phased out.

Like people have said, due to the fact that Microsoft keeps trying to make it more user friendly, Vista sucks up a whole lot more resources causing it to be slow, and many programs are still not compatible. Though, compatibility issues will disappear over time. It requires more RAM, a better vid card, and an overall better cpu chip to run at operating speed than XP requires. I'm guessing since it requires better components, it'll require more power, which isn't what you want for a laptop.

More in the opinion area now, I don't like the new layout. I dunno if you can change it, because I've used it very sparingly whenever I borrow my roommate's laptop, but having to "search" for programs whenever you hit the start just makes it annoying to me. Having to accept whenever you want to run a program is just annoying as well. It also seems to use more internet to use the internet, as our wireless slowed down a lot after he got his laptop, though it might be a coincidence.
