i looked into married filing separately. the net tax liability is the same in our case. the penalty i refer to is the fact that our incomes are combined and that is the rate we are taxed. our witholdings are based on our individual incomes.
frankly, we've both always claimed M-1 and have always gotten money back. we've both done a little job-hopping lately to boost our incomes, and i think that is the problem. our taxable gross is like 25% higher than the year before. substantially more was witheld, but we're in a bracket that sucks right now.
