Yet another SMOG question

Hey guys,

Good news, I am coming home from Afghanistan in about a month!

With that said, I am starting to plan and purchase the parts for the next stage of my STI build in preparation of the 2014 autoX season. A huge wall i am running into is i know at somepoint in 2014 i need to get my car smogged and i can't get any straight answers on successfully passing it with my plans.

Here is basically what I plan on doing/already have when i get home.

- ID 1000cc Injectors
- DW300 Fuel Pump
- Cobb TBE
- Grimmspeed TMIC
- Crawford AOS
- Grimmspeed FBCS
- Cobb SF Intake
- Cobb AP V3 with Snail Performance E85 Tune

My worry is you cant exactly "revert" back to stock from E85 when it comes time to SMOG and from what i understand its not really good to swap between E85 and 91. There also isnt really a way to just "flash back to stock" with the upgrades i plan on having.

Is it possible to just remove my DP and put the stock DP back on and go get smogged? All of the other parts on my car are either CARB approved or not visable. My one concern would be leaving the ECU with a custom E85 tune on it. Would the Smog station be able to tell?

Thanks for the help guys.

Will

The smog station should not be able to tell its an e85 tune and if i recall from a post before E85 tunes will produce less emissions. If you put your stock DP back on just stay out of boost. but you will need to drive it around to get the cats warm. You could also do this, get the tank to as close to empty as possible (less e85 in tank better ) go and fill up at least half a tank or full tank of 91, flash the ECU back to a 91 stage 2 or stage 1 OTS map (unless snail made you a 91map). Go home swap the DP, go get the cats nice and hot on your way to smog, pass test, swap out stock DP, run tank to as close to empty as possible, go fill with E85 and then flash back to e85 map.
Is your DP cat-less or catted?
If you do a search there should be a few posts about this very thing. Hopefully that helps you.

As stated above put on stock DP. Very little if anything is done to the closed loop running of your ECU I.E. idle. under 2500 rpm out of boost your emmissions will be the same. Also E-85 will burn more thouroughly and easily, reducing your emmissions.

Stock DP FTW and dont worry about it......

Your e85 tune will not affect your smog test negatively. In fact, because e85 burns more completely than regular 91 octane, people have been putting e85 into their regular OEM tuned cars in order to pass smog checks where they might otherwise fail.

They will very likely hassle you for every mod they can spot. Luckily, they don't really know what they are looking at 90% of the time.

I just got turned down by 3 smog shops in a row for having silicone hoses from the turbo to the OEM intercooler. Upgrading the intercooler is technically legal, but they will likely give you **** for it.

Are your silicone hoses black? Or different colors.

Thanks for touching on and backing up what i said in the beginning of my post about E85 burning cleaner.
My TurboXS TMIC was the one thing my smog tech didnt say anything to me about. he commented on my CAI and asked about my DP but since he saw two cats (and it passed the sniffer) he let it slide. He mentioned some shops might complain about silicone hoses or my A/O sep too. The put E85 into your 91 tune trick does work too. you just have to watch your e85 to 91 ratio.

Keep in mind it depends on the shop, HOWEVER know that all test only stations are now Star Smog stations. Which are VERY strict nowadays and won't hesitate to fail you if they suspect anything. Just a heads up.

This is exactly what i needed. I was mainly concerned with how the new OBDII check would work with a tune on my ECU. I wanted to ensure that the tune wouldnt raise any red flags. I will just swap my DP and head on in.

Like everyone said just put your stock DP back on for the smog. I'm tuned on E85 as well. First time I had to get my car smog'd I went in with my 3' catted DP and passed, this time they weren't so nice and had to swap DP.

My bro in law is a certified smog tech and he told me when they hook up to your OBD II port, it can't tell whether or not you are tuned. All its looking for is fault codes and if all the monitors are ready.
