As a former 280ZX owner (mine was destroyed at the hands of a n00b who will remain nameless for the time being) I heartily recommend the RB25. It's loosely based on the old L80, fits beautifully, revs fer hella dayz, and makes more than enough power. Plus they are not that expensive, you just have to look around to find one in good condition. Or rebuild it.

vq35de straight out of a wrecked 350z. it's already set up for longitudinal mounting, plenty of power and torque for a fairly light chassis, several blower / turbo kits available for down the road.
