I got the impression that he has more than $4k to move, and doesn't want to bone his tax advantage by doing it wrong/late.

oh snaps
My impression is that he has more than $5k to move. And that he can move at most $4k in 2007 and $5k in 2008. But if he moves the $4k now he can't move the $5k in 2008. But depending on when his cycle ends, he could potentially move the $4k now for 2007 and then a total of $5k over the next year.

I can only move $4k for 2007, but in 2008 the max is bumped up to 5k, so I could move the remainder over hopefully.
plays well with others

I do qualify for a Roth IRA. I do really like how it provides tax-free growth and can withdraw earnings earlier than a traditional IRA (59 1/2 vs 70 1/2.) I'm going to have to talk to my brokerage, but I think I may have a plan... Currently for 07 4k is the max I can contribute, so I contribute that then in 08 contribute to remainder if its possible.

It's weird that we're talking about this now, I got a letter regarding my 401k contributions last night so I called the broker. I ended up talking to their stock plan people (that handle the employee stock purchase program we have) and got a couple of options on how to take all of the stock I have currently and diversify it to make it more secure, and hopefully grow well.
I'm looking at an option similar to the FFFFX thing that Phister is talking about, but they also have a portfolio option for me that is managed by me. Not sure which I will take yet.

its win win right now for me. not only am i offsetting the temporary loss of value in the dollar, im also combating the inflationary pressure.... and getting a descent return on top of all that.
