Well thats the basic principle, but then trying to decide which funds to invest in and what not. I gotta roll over my 401k from a previous employer to a Roth IRA. Apparently the max I can contribute to it is $4k for 2007, but I have over 4k. For 2008 the max is $5k, but I still have over $5k...now I gotta find out what I can do with the remaining balance since I'll wait the few extra days for '08 and contribute the 5k max. I just don't want to be hit with taxes on the remaining balance if I choose to invest it or something else. I don't plan on withdrawing the remaining balance and spending it.

Well I wouldn't call it managed. It's just that I can choose what to buy. I chose to put most of it into a blended fund (FFFFX) that gets less risky as time goes on. The rest was in real estate (FRESX). I get an employer match so I'll take what I can get. It's not like I'm losing shares though. Most people would freak at the dollar loss but the share quantity still climbs. When the market turns around I'll be fine. Just have to tell myself that my buying power is stronger right now.

I wish my employer offered a post-tax IRA. In February I'll be getting matching 3% on a pre-tax one, but I like the idea of paying my taxes now, while I'm not earning much... but I'm earning. Paying taxes after retirement sounds like a plan for suckers to me.

I do qualify for a Roth IRA. I do really like how it provides tax-free growth and can withdraw earnings earlier than a traditional IRA (59 1/2 vs 70 1/2.) I'm going to have to talk to my brokerage, but I think I may have a plan... Currently for 07 4k is the max I can contribute, so I contribute that then in 08 contribute to remainder if its possible.
