SRIC firearms advice.
So I'm looking for something new and am willing to drop a little for a lot of fun.
Here is the narrowed list: (I know they are varied and for different purposes, but...)
Kimber TLE/RL, Warrior
Springfield Operator, TRP
Benelli M4
Springfield M1A SOCOM II
...and way low on the list:
Springfield XD 9
Volquartsen Lightweight, Superlight in .17 HMR (for those head-shot turkey hunts at Oaf's house. Did that ever happen?)

The Benelli is big bucks too.
What do you want to do with the rifle?

I like the Springfield because of the versatility. equipped for close, but still able to reach out.

For the money though, that Kel-Tec is pretty sweet. I'm going by J&G in Roseville this week. They sell and build some pretty sweet rifles. I'll see what they have in 7.62.

The M1A/M14 style weapon is a very accurate weapon that's been proven in the field for years.
My Grandfather would strike me dead if I said this in front of him but there's a reason why I was assigned to the M24 for some time and not the M14. That's because the M14 sucked as a sniper platform.
Here's my take on the issue... you're not out to cut throats with it so go with the most reliable weapon for the money that suits your need. Move out of California if you want my answer. But for what it's worth i've heard overall good things about the Kel-Tec. Some say it tends to shoot high, though...
EDIT: Didn't notice the Kimber. Although I do not typically consider Kimber for my pistols, I do think this would be a very good choice.

I've got two friends with M1A'a and I have loved shoot them both. They are both very accurate.
I think I am having a problem with the numbers. I am having a hard time deciding if I want to spend ~$1000 on the pistols... same problem with the .17HMR...
I love Kimbers. I got my hands on one of their pistols with the "melted" treatment that takes the edges off the gun. Very slick. The Desert Warrior has a less extreme version of this.
Now I'm thinking about getting rid of the USP for something else, too...

My point is your current options for the .308 aren't known as tack drivers when compared to all the other rifles that offer the .308. And based on your zombie answer i'm assuming you want to have fun with it, right? You can do this just fine with a .223 and spend less per round.
