The baby Volvo is made in The Netherlands(?) & shares a lot w/ the Mitsu something or other. Think Saab/Subaru.
This hurts to say, but have you looked at the lovely compact vehicles that GM makes?
As the commercial says: 30 models that get >30 mpg.

As for the volvo. I know it's outta your price range, but look into the Volvo V70R(wagon) or S60R (sedan).

Paul, I've spent the last 3 weeks in a Cobalt. Very brief review- I actually think it might make a decent race car, with the right mods, but it's mediocre as a daily driver.
The Saab wagon is definitely a good idea. You can get a Linear, fully loaded with 5 speed, for $20,601 with the GM Employee Pricing that's effective until Labor Day. 25-30 mpg, leather, HIDs, moonroof.

it's like an EG/EH civic hatch...great car for what it is and if this is 1992, it might top the list of recommendations. but look around and see how many young kids drive it, less alone mod it.
in a professional world, what you drive has as much to do with whether or not you mod it. it's these little intricacies that give your clients a hint of who you are. his line of work subjects him to that kind of judgement.
salty, how about a toyota prius or a nissan altima?

www.esurance.com to compare....
ford has Emp discount on Focusi right now...saw a commercial w/ Emp Dis & added rebates the 3 door is only $10K for a new car...not bad, but i'd never own a Focus...buddy hd one and it felt like you were driving in a minivan...and it had the stiff Ford feel inside...
stick w/ a Mazda/Toyota/Honda...i'd check into Prius...good MPG, shows you're thinking responsibly, kinda cool querky styling, but "smart" enough to not make it look like a kid's driving. i say, take this weekend to go test drive EVERYTHING!
DO NOT fall into the "what can i do to get you to buy this today" pitch....as nice as they make it sound make sure you test drive all your options...
then take a couple days to ponder your decision...then go back to do the final purchase afterwards.
they'll make you feel like you're wasting their time...but it's your car...
waste away IMO...NEVER go on the impulse buy...that's what they're counting on.
