It's gotten to the point where all I use my car for anymore is daily driving. Usually to and from appointments seeing how I work from home more often these days. Gas mileage isn't the best it could be with gas prices (as you know) and I’m also paying for WRX insurance like most all of you in similar age brackets. I dunno... the way I have my car modded is plenty fast for being a 4EAT. Think Nate got her at ~279bhp errr something.
But it's a little much. I'd also like to advertise on my car and don't think a tuned WRX is a good canvas. I wouldn't think of a WRX driver as being serious in the mortgage industry, you know? Just something about it that isn’t as conservative as it should be. I could see someone driving a small environmentally friendly sedan or luxury SUV in this line of work. It's not like I have clients in my car. I'm a broker, not a realtor.
I got a cushy 72 month loan on the car because I had good credit. So my low payments kept me from paying it off. I owe $14080.00. I have 39,000 miles on her with a few nice scratches the driver side door (someone keyed my car). As for the rest of the car, it's nothing a good weekend detailing couldn't handle. How much should I ask for? I don’t plan to part her out seeing how it’s a custom TBE (Nate had to fabricate some pieces to fit), uppipe and reflash.
Now for the most important question... Which car should I look for? Looking for a manual with decent/good passenger leg room </= $18,000 with better MPG and insurance rates than the WRX. Oh yeah, something safe wouldn't hurt. If I can avoid a coffin on wheels then that would be great, too. Please help me decide!
I do plan to get an STi in the future but with recent priority investments I'm running too lean.

$18,000 with good passenger leg room. Not rear leg room? Only car I've been in with good leg room was a hihger end Lexus and Mercedes...(granted I haven't been in the smaller ones.)
You might want to take a look at Volvo, Acura or a Lexus ES 300. used of course.

U want gas mileage that will own most hybrids, and has good leg room for a passenger... Three Letters
TDi!!! Go find a VW TDI and say bye bye to ur local gas station you will only see him about once a month... When I went to UTi(mechanic school) some of the teachers there had TDI's and they said they where getting around 800 miles on a tank... 800Miles/13 gallon tank=61.31564684984 MPG
BTW I can vouch for VW Saftey, VW or Volvo are the highest saftey cars... need proof??
The ONLY damage that came out of this whole crash(I had a passenger he didn't even have a glass scratch on him) was a brocken arm...

You might be able to find an IS300 in that range. Then you get Lexus luxury-car mortgage guy image, with decent performance. But since you're primarily looking to save money on gas, your choices are diesels or hybrids. I haven't been in the current generation civic yet, but I'd check that and the hybrid accord out. Both are a bit over your budget, but Honda has sweet lease deals these days which might work out the same as conventional finance on $18k by the end.
used IS300...
...or a new (wait until 06 & get an 05) Mazda3 S, very nice and lots of features for a "entry level" car. i was impressed w/ the build quality of the one i owned for that month.
Plus Dared can hook up the deal on a Mazda...
you might even be able to get into a Mazda6 for that price range on a special
if you do go w/ Mazda DO NOT go to Folsom Lake Imports...they're shady and their customer service SUX!
stay away from the v33-dUb!!! you'll regret it in the end! Audi too...same crappy Bosch electronics...my mom has a 02 A6 2.6T and it's been an electrical nightmare! heard many similar stories as well...

Is it true that if I sell my car privately I have to smog it first? I can't just sell it "as is." Let's just say I'm pretty sure it will not pass smog.

Well considering Subaru's are AWD = lower MPG i'd say no.
Nothing used though... I want something new that has decent rear legroom, good MPG, low insurance, and that will last me 10yrs as a daily driver.
Anyone have any reviews on the Mazda 3 S?

About 18-19mpg. Automatic with decent mods, so...
I'd like to get 25+.

Probably what you owe?
If you'd end up being up side down, you have to factor in that $$.
The big mpg killer is the AT; Mrs Oaf's Legacy got 21mpg...with her driving it.
My 1996 Legacy, on the other hand, is a manual & has the potential to get 27mpg.
That's when Mrs Oaf is at the helm.
I get about 22mpg.
But then again, I use the pedal on the right as an ON/OFF switch.
