It's true.
Back when I was the **** NCO for my unit we had a guy get a false-positive on poppy seeds. He wasn't punished after we pissed him again and again and confirmed he ate the cakes at every meal and for snacks. He used to collect poppy seed pound cakes from MREs by trading items with other people. Surprisingly, it only took a realistically edible amount to get the result.
