i know what you guys are saying though, the property crime/auto theft rate in modesto is ridiculous, so exageration or not, the message got across haha.

Eh, it's like the Modesto of Southern California.

Former cowtown/truckstop that someone thought would be a good place to build the 'burbs.

I wouldn't consider living anywhere south of Elk Grove in the central valley if I had a choice. I would commute instead.

it's not as bad as the surrounding areas of upland, chino, and ontario. at least it's only an hour or so away from la and the oc. and only 3 hours from vegas!

This is true.

Also on the plus side, if you wanna go to the Street Legal Drags, they run them at Fontana Speedway (show-up early, they run out of tech inspection cards fast! ).

If the gf likes shopping, there's a huge-*** mall right next door to the track.

damn that would be a long commute for me. living in hawaii, a one hour drive is considered long haha, maybe once i get used to long drives, couple years down the line commuting from sacramento might be feasible.

thanks rau, im looking to make the best of the situation. the move to modesto is just a stepping stone for us. mahalos.

i grew up in Modesto. the town sucks...used to be better (quieter, smaller, etc) but not by much.

rent is cheap though. you can afford to rent a house with garage. there is a lot of car theft but nothing has happened to my Suby since i bought it in 2002. on the other hand, there have been two attempts to jack my car in San Jose in the past 18 months alone. a garage makes all the difference.

stay in the newer neighborhoods. sure, thieves know to look there but at least your neighbors won't be too ghetto. my sister is part of law enforcement so we have sheriffs & MPD's rolling through our neighborhood at least a few times per night. LOL
