You can request the latest speed survey data for that section of road. Speed limits in California are supposed to be set using the 85% rule with a few exceptions getting a 5 MPH bump down.

The survey is supposed to be done in a way that accurately samples the speed of traffic that is not influenced by things like cops parked on the side of the road. The speed of which 85% of the vehicles are travelling at or slower is then rounded down to the nearest 5MPH. There are certain maximums in place for different types of roads. So even if the servey says 85% of the cars are going at or below 95MPH in a residential area, the limit will be capped to 25.

What I'm not sure about is if those radar "This is your speed" signs are used for surveys. If they are then I would have to agree that the usually get drivers to slow down which would skew the survey. So I make it a point to try to peg these signs.

Rumor has it you can fight a ticket if the limit is set illegally.

Man, the stuff you learn in traffic school is worth it
1) you can fight a speeding ticket if the limit is set lower then the speed survey. This is covered under VC as a speed trap

2) they do use those signs for the speed survey.. so make sure you go as fast as you can to drive up the survey

That's some good info there.

The funny thing is that the cop was behind me while I was waiting to turn onto Douglas and I knew he was there, I just drove like normal. Try driving 30 MPH down that stretch, it seems like you could almost walk faster.

That's what I do. I like to see how much my car can accelerate before I pass it The ones that say "SLOW DOWN" after you're going 10-15mph over suck

+1, i have to drive down foothills everyday and i hardly ever go over the speed limit and if it is over, its only by like 3 mph. i see so many ricer kids booking it down the bridge over the tracks thinking they are hot ****... one day, they'll get theirs.

and I also noticed....cops look at me like they hate me when they see me driving.. wtf is that!?

I almost got caught in a new speed trap today...

It was a side road off cirby, one I use to go to the bank. PD was parked behind a big SUV (that getto "RESCUE" SUV with the zebra stripes) with the laser zaper. Its a road that USED to be 35mph but was revised a couple years ago to 25mph

Anyway, got stuck behind a car when it happened... I'm thinking its the same cop who parks by our house to catch stopsign runners (good thing)

Oh, and that Foothills overpass thing... Where is the speed trap at exactly? I've been commuting over that thing for a couple weeks now, and I tend to do ~60mph when I get on there off PFE to get past the work trucks/Semi's that I can't pass on PFE until then...

My choice of words might have not been the best.

Replace "speed trap" with "large effort to efforce the local speed laws".
