home theater stuff
So I got an estimate from the home theater company. I know that the Klipsch speaker they were pricing out, are good, but does anyone have input on the Yamaha RX-V1700 receiver?? Or what about the Toshiba T2 HD dvd player?? Just want to know if this is the way to go.

Got the 5200Es hooked up last night. I pulled a ton of unneeded cables out of the entertainment center. It's mostly HDMI now. So far I have a few minor gripes.
1. The on screen GUI overlays on top of your video source except when your input is HDMI. Boo!
2a. You can label the inputs and choose the audio and video sources for each but you can't select HDMI video and HDMI audio for an input. No biggie. Just use the hard inputs HDMI1, HDMI2, or HDMI3.
2b. You can't rename the HDMI inputs.
3. The Input select dial scrolls through the inputs except the HDMI ones. There is a seperate button to toggle through HDMI inputs
4. GUI doesn't feel as zippy as the PS3 or PSP does.
5. When I pulled out my old 555ES receiver I noticed it had gold plated everything. The 5200 has gold plated nothing. I also thing the 555ES weighs slightly more with almost nothing in it. The 5200ES is crammed with daughter cards and stuff.
6. My HD DirecTivo remote doesn't have the ability to control the reciever volume.
That's the bad. Here's the good.
1. Speaker autocalibrate FTW!!!!
2. Serial port for future updates.
3. Everything is upconverted to 1080P and spit out the HDMI port.
4. yay! for not having to switch inputs on the TV

Sweet, pics of new setup? Did you verify the speaker calibration with an SPL meter? curious how accurate it is. Does it adjust EQ as well or only levels? FUnny how you comment about the weight, the transformer in the 555ES is one of the best SONY ever put in a reciever, and by the sounds of it, the best. What are your plans for the 555ES? You could do a component swap. JOY!!!!

the speaker cal sets distance, level, and EQ for each speaker. When the test is done you have a couple of choices for the EQ.
1. Flat - This makes everything sound as flat as possible
2. Match Front - This sets the EQ on the front pair to no EQ and EQs the rest of the speaks to match. (this is what I'm using)
3. Engineer - This tries to EQ your speakers to sound as close to the Sony test theater as possible.
4. No EQ.
The settings are stored in one of three presets so you can setup for different listening positions.
As of right now I don't know what I'm going to do with the 555ES or the 36XBR250.

Keep the XBR still the best picture next to the 40" you can get. I was going to pick up a 71" samsung, the sales guy asked me what I'm using now. He said I was crazy to get rid of that set.
