I guess I 'm a (lifelong) student who helps manage a restaraunt and teaches self defense classes to pay the mortgage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't self-defense classes for the kids who get hassled by these "wannabe-thugs-in-training" you describe?

I mean, most of the kids that fit the profile don't have the self-esteem issues that makes them an easy target on the playground. Quite the opposite, usually.

It's more of a hobby for me now, it's not too of a career lucrative here. There're all types of kids, geeks, sissy boys, malicious violent sociopaths, jocks, wannabe gangsters, skater kids, goths, preppy girls, children of illegal aliens, future dykes and softball players you name it. If your parents can afford it, why not? I've taught classes in santa rosa, napa, west sac and benicia demographics don't seem to be in indicater.

So you can't weed any of them out? I mean, if the kid is already a known bully, can't you dismiss them?

Oh yeah, we kick out the really bad ones, but it's always better if you can guide them. One thing about the job is that unlike thier teachers at school, they respect you and they want to be there. You have ultimate control over them. You can smack them up a little bit during sparring, you can give them pushups, emberass them, put them up against the really tough kids etc. it's almost limitless the amount of power you have over them.

also, self defense is a guise for any type of martial art. Usually parents who can afford lessons don't want them learning to fight, they most likely want to teach them discipline, make them lose weight, build self confidance and probably last self defense and stranger awareness when they're really young.

benefits are far better at the new place. they cost a bit more, but worth it. my current company didn't even offer to pass the costs on to us.

as for work environment, co-workers, etc... only one way to find out.

Programming is cake. There's no opinion, no citing of sources or supporting of opinions. It either works or it doesn't. Try writing a program that distinguishes between civil rights and civil liberties :\
