Angry IT Guys - I need help

So, after 1 week of complaining to Surewest, they came out today and left me a new modem. I hooked it up, and while I finally have connectivity between the modem and my desktop, I still have no internet access. A call to Surewest was of little use, as they say everything is working fine and it must be a setting on my PC (mind you, I have not changed any settings).

So how am I typing this urgent call for help? Well, my wireless router was unplugged in order to troubleshoot the modem connection. On a whim, I decided to take the CAT5 cable and plug it from the modem to my laptop. Bang, full internet connection (although yahoo seems to be puking right now).

So I reconnected the wireless router and while I lost internet access, I used the laptop to change some settings on the wireless router (no more static IP or static DNS). Bang, internet access restored.

But I still cannot access the internet from my desktop, whether it is routed through the wireless router via the hardline CAT5 or direct from the modem to the PC.

What should I check on the PC? I've already been through the internet options section, and I have "automatically detect settings" checked o the LAN settings button under the connections tab.

My device manager shows the following network adapters:

*1394 Net Adapter
*Intel PRO/1000 CT Network Connection (I'm assuming this is CAT5 connection on the motherboard)
*MAC Bridge Miniport

All three were there before. I've tried disabling the MAC port with no change.

Any suggestions?

p.s.: this is a Comtrend CT-5071 ADSL2+ Ethernet Router and Surewest neglected to leave me the manual with the admin password for the modem. My internet searches for a manual turned up little other than some spanish language sites. I found some user name and passwords for the modem from them, but none of them worked. I'm thinking if I can get into the modem settings, I might be able to fix some of the issues.

edit: I lost iernet via the wireless while playing with some settings. Changing them back didn't help. I'll try to reboot, but for now I am back on the hardline from the modem to the laptop. Why that works, but the same hardline to the desktop doesn't, I don't have any clue.

i remember we had huge problems out in Oklahoma with *** Cable. first it was because they sent us a faulty modem. then it was because they never registered the account. then it was because when they initially installed the cable connection, the connected a ground incorrectly. then my parents moved to Maryland.

off the top of my head, maybe it's because you don't have the admin password for the modem, and thus no admin access to turn the modem on. i'm assuming you called Surewest to ask them to send out another manual? you might want to call them a couple times at least, i remember when i had to call SBC for them to replace a faulty DSL filter, i had to call like 5 times before they sent it out (this was in Oklahoma again).

if it's not that, the only other thing i can possibly think of off the top of my head is that the port on your motherboard is faulty. your laptop gets signal, so it's not the cable. you got the router and the wireless modem to work, so those aren't the problem.

hopefully someone else will know more than me, cause that's about the best i can give you.

The modem is on, hence my ability to post via the laptop either through wireless or directly connected to the modem. It's something between my PC and the modem.

Currently I have my PC hardwired to the wireless router as usual and my laptop running off the wireless. The laptop is 100% fine. The PC has no internet, but I can access the wireless router menu via the connection. Just for some reason, the PC cannot get beyond that to the internet.

it's gotta be something on your PC then. either with your ethernet card, or if you've got one of those wireless modems that plugs into the USB port, maybe that's it? i've heard of ethernet cards failing, and even of USB ports shorting out (i don't know too much about computers, so i'm not even sure how that's possible though), so for me at least, it's not unheard of.

have you tried reinstalling the software that runs your wireless connection on your PC? i recall another time when i was having trouble with my DSL (again, in Oklahoma. i haven't had a single problem with my DSL out here in Cali for some reason), all i had to do was reboot the Yahoo! software, and it ran just fine.

My first suggestion, which works 95% of the time, is to disable any firewall software you have running. Especially if its Norton or Mcaffee.

Additionaly, it may be DNS. As a test, o0n your desktop, try to browse to:

http://216.239.39.99

Be sure not to put www in.

It's definitely some DNS issue.

http://www.yahoo.com does not work.

http://66.218.71.84 does work.

I'll fart around with the Windows Firewall and my McAfee after dinner.

The Surewest lady called me back with the modem user id and passowrd too, but thanks for your help.

You can try manually assigning DNS in your system as well. These are the new DNS settings:


66.60.130.2

I wish surewest would put out a modem that didn't have a router built in. THey have some effed up hardware solutions

The router is optional functionality. It's set to router mode by default for a variety of very good reasons.

Now, depending on your platform, it can be EASILY changed to bridge mode. (The other platform requires a change at the isp.)
