God Damned Tivo (decisions)

So. I had to buy a new wireless router today. I have decided to start using WPA. My standalone, 3 or so year old Tivo unit says to use WPA I have to use the Tivo brand USB wireless adapter (my linksys usb g wireless is not good enough).

So do I :
  1. Spend $59.99 for that USB adapter
  2. Spend $100 and buy the DirecTV receiver/DVR (or try to find one for free)
  3. Not be stubborn and go back to WEP

You decide.

whatever you have to do, stick with tivo. other dvr's seem prehistoric in comparison.

But I already have a Linksys USB Wireless adapter in the Tivo unit. The damn thing just won't let me use WPA with it, I have to have a Tivo branded model.

I have the DTV DVR. It works, but IMO its not worth it if you already have a Tivo.

Unless you want an HD one, I guess it is cheaper than the Tivo series 3.

Dude, use WEP. WPA is a PITA for a home network and overkill IMO. I've never seen anything have issues with WEP but all kinds of devices **** up on WPA.

WEP take about 53 seconds to bust open. People have been known to crack it rather than get up and go look at their own passphrase.

Breaking 104-bit WEP in less than 60 seconds

I may have a DTV DVR available if Wave figures out how to get cable to my house.

Oh, I believe it. I'd be curious to see what 128-bit encryption does to that exploit; I don't follow the whole process and I'm not sure whether it's alinear or exponenetial rampup past the 104-bit discussed.

Changing the default password on the router (heh) and doing MAC authentication seems like an easier way for 99%. If I was working with secure data I'd worry more. Maybe all my hardware's old, but a couple of my laptops **** the bed when it comes to WPA, let alone standalone devices like Tivo's and game systems.

WEP doesn't actually use 128 bit. Part of it is known hence the 104 bit reference. I did have some issues with WPA but that seemed to go aware when I stopped trying to block the SSID broadcast.
