engine swap

no, not me. Does anyone know the codes/regulations that govern engine swaps, off hand?

I have a friend that has a beater that is dying and he just wants to dump another engine in it instead of buying a new car.

Isn't it something like same make/model with all emissions gear from the same or newer year?

Does it have to be the same make/model?

on that note, the Forester is classed by the DOT as an SUV, so putting a FXT engine into a passenger car (AKA WRX/Leg/Impreza/etc.) is a no-no according to CA law.

also, IIRC, the engine has to have the level of smog parts that came on the year of the engine, NOT your chassis.
so if you drop in an 06 STi engine into say a 93 Impreza, the engine has to meet the 06 smog standards, including all sensors, electrical system, ECU, etc.
The OBD has to match the year of the engine as well in the ECU.

I thought the engine (and it's emissions junk) has to be the same year as the chassis or newer. Not the other way around.

NAFAIK...
the reason being, if you drop an LS1 into an '80 Land Cruiser the LS1 has to match the emissions of the year/make/model the LS1 ORIGINALLY came out of NOT the 1980 LC.

CARB doesn't like engines that have emissions related components removed from them in any way/shape/form.

this is to keep ppl from dropping a 06 vette engine into a 79 'maro and by-passing a bunch of current smog parts.

That's what I said. Newer engine with newer emissions stuff in older car.

So here's a question.

Why do you need to tell anyone?

But also a SUV is classified as a station wagon, meaning passenger vehicle. From a SUV or a pickup to a car is OK usually. If the GVWR is over 3 tonnes, its a truck. Truck like a semi or a dump truck. Then its illegal.
