Liek I said, the mercury from burned-out CFLs can be recycled. Wehre do you think they're getting it now? Mostly from old defunct mercury-switched thermostats I expect. GE isn't making Mercury out of magical pixie dust, it's either coming as a leftover from other chemical processes, being mined directly, or sourced from recycled materials. No matter where it came from it has to be somewhere, and I think having it inside light bulbs that reduce energy consumption is as good place as any other. I just think banning incandescents is idiotic.

and if someone breaks the light bulb into billions of pieces...? like most people do who just throw them in the trash can, and they end up at dumps shattered in pieces, which then get rained on... where does the mercury go then?
