Probably too late . . .
This is probably too late, but . . .
Always start at the physical layer. At the very least, reseat EVERYthing that is even remotely the problem. Including the power cords.
As has been suggested, look for bad fans, etc. Check the pin-outs on your VGA/DVI cables and video card, too. A loose VGA pin can cause some weird video problems. (BTDT)
If you haven't nuked your WinDoze installation via reinstall/defrag/reformat/sledgehammer, you might want to get SprinRite. At least call Gibson Research. They wouldn't even sell me their product because they didn't think it would fix the problem I had a couple of years ago.

I'm a fan of Spinrite but he tried installing on a different HD and it still didn't work so I don't think both of his hard drives went south.

Got my new mobo today (thanks newegg!). I swapped it in and reinstalled windows without any problems. I'll spend tomorrow night updating XP and reloading all of the drivers and utilities. It *looks* like this fixed it.

Did my Windows Update last night (all 71 files
).
One annoying thing is that on boot, I get a screen asking me which XP installation the computer should load. Both of the ones listed have the same description. When I reinstalled XP, it overwrote the old install, so I'm not sure why it thinks there are two.
How do I get rid of this? Is there some registry setting I need to change?

Or just change the 30 second time to 1.
