Depends on your needs. Dell is fine, but depends. Do you want to play games, or just use the internet/word? If just internet/word that machine is fine, for games its not.

Exactly, let us know what your needs are for the computer and what you plan to do with it. That'll give us a better idea of what kind of parts you'll want to have in your computer.

yeah that machine is fine for internet/music/word... typical user stuff. its only got 512 mb ram though. i'd opt for 768 mb or 1 gb though, guru's what do you think? is 1 gb too much?

512 is plenty, the only time I've needed more than 512 is when I've done 3d rendering. That eats up gobs of memory, at 768, I ran out. I could have easily used 2 gigs to render a 1600x1200 high quality render w/ extremely high quality texture maps.

We're talking about 21 MP texture maps. Amazing.

yeah, XP runs very good on 512.

my next video editing machine though, 2-4 gigs since it eats ram like an MF.

That's an ok computer for every day tasks. It would even handle a little gaming relatively well(I'm not talking Doom 3 at 1600x1200 at 8x AA, but it will do ok). The only downside since I don't see any vid card options is that it's more tha likely integrated video, whhich can easily be rectified, but I can't find the slot specs to see if it at least has a spare agp port if not a PCI-X. It does come with an LCD, although it's an analog LCD so it won't be crystal clear. For the price it isn't bad and their service is pretty good.

I have seen better deals on better computers though. Keep an eye on http://www.techbargains.com/ and once in a while dell throws a pretty good bone. After stacking discounts I picked up a $1500 D600 laptop for $600

Here's one for $100 more than your system(after rebate) that absolutey crushed the one you posted the link to.
Dell Small Business has the new Dimension 9100 Desktop with 945P chipset and BTX form factor technology - Pentium 4 630 3Ghz 512MB DDR2-533/80GB Serial ATA HD, DVD-ROM, 48x CD, Free 20in Dell LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X300SE PCI Express video card, 7.1 Audio, 1yr warranty, Word Perfect, XP Home $859 after $100 rebate (Limit 5 per customer), shipped free. $19 handling. Tax is charged. Exp Sun 9/11

Customize it under 9100.
Too bad it just expired though.

another good one that just expired
Dimension 4700 P4 520 2.8Ghz 256MB/80GB 19in LCD, $529 after rebate. 1yr warranty +$29. Exp 9/11
Just wait and keep an eye out.

That computer will be much slower than your laptop. I say get a nice 20" LCD, a docking station with good keyboard and mouse, then use the laptop for all occasions.

^ what he said. if all youre getting a desktop for is comfort, just get some peripherals for your laptop and then disconnect everything for portability. dont waste yer money. just add an external dvd-r and youre in business.

its funny cuz i just bought a laptop on friday for the convenience, and cuz for my purposes, i dont need a powerful desktop anymore.
