i've been on the fence about the switch also....
been w/ ATT since they were whatever company they were before that...(pacbell? or something like that about 55-6 years ago)

used to be the best provider...
but then the jumped on the suck train and then they sold to blingular...
who thinks flashy ads and a cool logo is going to carry them as a company....

their rates suck and their customer service sucks even more...
i hate the fact that they want me to switch off my TDMA phone and sign a 2 year contract in order for me & the wifey to get new GSM phones that may or may not work at our house...

i would go w/ Tmo but they don't work well at our house which is critical for both of us...
Tmo has better plans and rates & from what i hear customer service isn't aweful...
plus it's only a 1 year contract minimum...
Tmo phones suck though...and their coverage on the GSM bands isn't any good. (no 850 band).

anyone know if you can get a cingular phone that covers 850/1800/1900 bands and use your SIM from Tmo in it? will it work on the 850 band then even though TMO doesn't use 850???

You'd have to unlock your new cingular phone to use the T mobile SIM in it. I might just buy a phone outright and keep my ATT SIM for it. The problem with that is they now have larger SIMs for some of the phones more advanced features.

cool...good to know...
TigerDirect.com has a new section of unlocked phones on their site.

the one i want to get is the Nokia 6230 cuz it's small & has all the features you can get on a phone and it is still a nokia...
but Tmobile doesn't have the same model. & Tiger wants like $300+ for it...
plus that still doesn't guarantee me service at our house in the woods.

update:

i spoke with cingular customer service today and found out one interesting tid-bit for us att customers who migrate over to cingular... we're considered new cingular customers at that point and fall under the 30 day cancellation option. so i wasn't even close to being able to cancel my ATT service without a hefty fee, but now i can get out of cingular completely any time between now and June 5th.

with that said, is Verizon any better than Cingular?

verizon phones suck!
i've heard they intentionally limit the features on the phones so you'll pay for the verizon service...friggin scam if it's true.
but i don't have any first hand knowledge...

BTW after June 5th, what happens to att customers???
are we left on the streets??
prolly go to Tmo if the phones work at our house....
better pricing for more mins...
oh yeah, and "rollover" can eat it!
what a gimmic!

i have cingular and i share the plan with my mom. you can get 1000 text mesaging for like ten bucks i think? my mom and i share 1100 minutes and we never go over. the service sucks in my area with most phones and it doesnt really bother me since i can just use the house phone. i do agree though it isnt as good at att. i miss att.... anyways just my two cents.

I was a previous Pac-Bell PCS customer. They changed their name to Cingular after some mergers/spinoffs. Many years later I wanted a new phone at the 'new customer' price. We'll no go. So I had to have my wife buy the phone in her name. Then later I wanted another new phone so I went with ATT and their 'new customer' prices. I wonder if I even qualify to go back to Cingular since I technically wouldn't be new. Hmmm.

I am thinking of switching to sprint since the coverage of the new place is vast superior (LOL BIG WORDS ) to AT&T
