In terms how is it broken and are u sure u cant fix it?
If one of the rod is not on the rail then simply remove the panels one by one until you reach that rod. Pull the rod and lube it and put it back on. put the rest of the panel back on and spray tons of lub oil on each rail + chain.
If the chain is not pulling, unhook the garage from chain (should be a rope). If the chain is still not pulling with the garage unhooked, u need a new motor.

i just went through this last month. turned out it was a broked capacitor that cost about $17. unfortunately the diagnostic fee was like $70 the symptoms were that that it would start to open or close the door and crap out immediately. like the motor just wouldn't turn.

as for DIY, garage door openers can be a major PITA, especially if you're prone to using a butterknife for a screwdriver

I think the spring gave out, or the travel mechanism (the part that engages the worm gear) gave out and won't engage fully. Either way, the symptom is that if you don't actually lift the door yourself when trying to open it, the latch just skips over the worm gear assembly, shaking everything to ****. Unlock the latch to raise the door manually and you can move it through its whole travel freely, so there's no resistance, but the door does *weigh* a **** ton more than it should.
My thought is that the spring assembly either lost tension (debatable) or spun free (more likely) and is no longer giving any assist to the opener, so it can't pull the door up on it's own and the gears are skipping under load. Unfortunately, I don't know how to tension the overhead spring, and I know enough about garage door springs that I don't want to **** with it.

Lol, I was the one over at his house last night figuring out what broke
Matt, call Home Depot, seriously. Parts, if you need it, are going to be cheaper through them anyways, and they're set up to do installs on weekends.
