what I don't get is, why would Subaru go thru the trouble of changing the grill shape of every model to gain an "identity" then throw that generic Chevy/Ford/Chrysler style econobox grill on the final production model????

Because customers were very vocal on how ugly the new nose was. The constant rearrangement of the front end ever since the bugeye has made me think that Subaru product planning doesn't really have any *****, and is easily swayed by internet opinion.

if that's the case, lets see how long their "all-growed-up-hawt-hatch-zoomzoom-mazda-matrix-clone" endeavor lasts.

I think the hatchback concept will stay, but we can probably expect a few refreshes and design massages (like the GD) on this chasis.

IMO i really think they could have successfully done the hatch with a better front end design and better fender lines (read: flared more).

although I know the cost effectiveness of having flatter body lines was probably a major contributor to the overall design they could have done something more sleek like the Audi All-road flares.

Yeah, the grill is awful. I mean, who looks to Chrysler and thinks "Hmm, that'd be a good grill to copy".

The WRC car will have some serious flares though. Heck, even the STi version might have some nicer body work on it.

Have they released pics of the STi yet?

Nothing official yet (or even as semi-official as the leaked Motor Trend article), but I think there are a few renders floating around that look pretty good.

the one EddyRS posted has some promise, but it's an obvious photochop.
too bad they couldn't have kept something unique to subaru about the grill...MAN! that's the worst part IMO.

It does l;ook like a front mount there (I was thinking that too), but it could also just be the radiator without the AC compressor in front of it. Or it is painted silver (as apposed to STD black).

The grill looks right.....just got off the Global subaru webpage and they have the same grill showing (just the grill....with the 2 chrome wings going off the sides of the star emblem). As it shows on the STI. Looks like Subaru is going to use this new badge on all they 08 models.

But as always we need to take everything that comes out now with a grain or two of salt and basically wait until the "official" shots are released by FHI, and hope for the best.

ED
