Brian Lock Takes Subaru to Top Step in Oklahoma

9/18/2005 Hallet, OK- The US Touring Car Championship made it’s second-to-last stop on Sunday in the beautiful Oklahoma countryside. Not only was this the Tour’s first appearance at Hallet Raceway, but it would be the first ever double points East/West Tour crossover event. Double points meant double stakes for Brian Lock and Dave Brown. Lock had been systematically shaving points from Brown’s points lead all year, and this was a chance for either competitor to sway that margin in their favor. A win from Brown would mean clinching the championship, where a win from Lock would sustain the Driver’s Championship until the very final round.

The first sessions on Hallet’s unique circuit proved revealing. “The track was a flowing track, requiring very precise lines to be fast,” said Lock, “but it was also extremely bumpy, which works against that. Lucky for us the WRX has great travel, and our DMS setup gave us the flexibility to set up the car exactly how we needed it to be to handle such a track.” This was evidenced by the Subaru’s dominance in the early sessions. It rode smoothly through the bumps while other cars struggled for traction. Time was continually gained throughout the sessions on Saturday with minor chassis adjustments, and Lock won the provisional Pole.

I apologize for living in last week but I didn't realize you were competing in the USTCC...my GRM just ran out, so I found out when I bought the October issue.

Anyhow, I'm confused (nothing a little bit more research on my part wouldn't fix) but I thought that Irish Mike was the only Subaru in the USTCC; I especially didn't know there was a GM6 (I think this is it in autox form)running as well. And NOW I realized how really hosed up I am since Irish Mike is actually competing in the World Challenge (whatever that is) and I couldn't find where Gary Sheehan is competing at all.

I'm rambling, but I would very much like to keep up with all-things-Subaru with regards to racing and didn't realize how far behind I was.

Anyhow, congrats. Back to my researching.

....any help on deciphering the different sanctioning bodies in the US with w2w classes for the Impreza? SCCA, NASA, USTCC....???

Thanks

SCCA has T2 where the STi can run
SCCA has World Challenge where the WRX can run
NASA has USTCC where the WRX can also run.

Those are the only w2w classes as far as I know. At least the only semi-pro/pro ones.

Brian, I'm curious. When you made up your mind to begin competing, how confident were you in your skills and your car? What did you do to prepare as far as preping your car as well as putting a team together? I'm guessing you probably had to decide to take a big step since you knew that it would get real expensive real quick.

At the club level I did not have to much invested so there was not that much pressure. I went out and just had a great time in Honda Challenge. But after taking the huge step in buying the Subaru, and figuring out how to finance actually running it (which ment leaving college), I had to have a lot of confidence it my driving or I would not succeed. Any good racecar driver has to be the slighest bit cocky (most are very cocky), if not, they will not win.

As far as my team goes I made sure that all I would have to do on the weekends was drive so I put together a team with my family, all of which I knew were more than capable of running a professional team. All the risks paid off because we are very competitive our first year, and have a ton of confidence for next season when we will hopefully move up in the racing world.
