that seems to happen pretty much every year. i guess the prospect of hundreds millions of dollars in tools and exotic race cars attracts every scum bag for miles arround.

if i recall, there were concerns that Rally Turkey was going to be cancelled last year if we had gone to war with Iraq earlier.

Cripes! Shinozuka's out as of leg 8 as well. Apparently, he had a rear axle problem which eventually overheated to the point of catching the car on fire! They're fine, but out of the rally.

it looks like the field has been cut in half, with only 210 vehicles in the running compared to 400 at the start.

i'm not finding McRae in todays standings yet, but its possible that he hasn't finished today's stages yet.

Wow, cancelled stages, that sucks. Maybe the organizers should hire mercenaries of their own

well, Colin's out of contention after losing more then two days (!) in stage 9. Colin's car, Ari's car and the Nissan service truck were in the desert of stage 9 for over two days repairing the vehicles, and then making 1000 miles of road section to Bobo-Diulasso yesterday.

If that's not hard-core, I don't know what is.

Colin's dedication to finish this race, despite being out of contention, is truly hardcore. He could have easily given up a few days ago, but he kept on fighting.

Hats off to Colin, even if he doesn't win.

i agree, Colin's decision is pretty damn hardcore. he and Ari have had some really crappy luck on this rally, and its admirable that they're going to try to finish.

After plenty of questions and incertitude, the two Nissan Pickup vehicles driven by Ari Vatanen and Colin McRae finally reached Bobo Dioulasso this afternoon, before the 18:00 deadline, after which they would have been excluded from the race. They will therefore be able to rejoin the trail tomorrow, having lived through the sort of moments that only the Dakar can provide. A fine human adventure, and an amazing sporting achievement, considering the huge distance they had to cover in a relatively short time.

At 15:25 exactly, Colin's Nissan Pickup reached the Bobo Dioulasso bivouac, after three problemfilled days spent in the heart of Africa. With numerous journalists and photographers waiting impatiently for him, all of whom had been holding their breath since last Friday, the Scottish driver appeared quite ‘fresh'. Tina Thörner, his co-driver, smiling widely, got out of the car dressed in a pretty African tunic, bought on the way, in order to have some clean clothes to wear. She admitted later that Colin had bought the same, but with decorated with blue elephants…
So if they had been delayed just a few more hours they would have been out regardless. Gripping stuff!

Well, McRae showed the world how serious he is about the Dakar today. He won the stage

from:http://www.autosport.com/newsitem.asp?id=25753&s=13

McRae set the fastest time on stage 13

Colin McRae has set the fastest time on the 13th stage of the Dakar Rally today (Wednesday), becoming the first Briton since 1990 to win a stage of the epic desert enduro.

The Scot led home a Nissan sweep of the top three positions, heading team-mate Giniel De Villiers by 7m40s, with Ari Vatanen a further 1m7s back. The last British driver to win a Dakar stage was Andrew Cowan.

Following his earlier transmission troubles, which left him stranded in the desert for much of the weekend, McRae remains well off the lead of the event, although his success today has lifted him from 21st to 18th in the overall standings.

Event leader Stephane Peterhansel was eighth quickest through the stage. However his chief rival, team-mate Hiroshi Masuoka, could only manage the seventh fastest time, gaining just 2m14s, ensuring that Peterhansel still enjoys a lead of over one hour.

the dust on last night's tv broadcast was amazing. No wind at all, and just thick curtains of dust everywhere. That would have been really trying to attempt to drive through.

i'm impressed hat McRae was able to win the stage, considering that this is his first time running the Dakar, and the problems with his Nissan. then again, there wasn't really anything to loose.

W00t. Colin won the final stage, but sadly finished 20th due to mechanical troubles in the middle of the rally.

Colin gets a dancing banana  for wining two stages on his first attempt at the Dakar.
