Is that 9pm eastern time? Would love to watch it...it will be weird to see Colin in something other than a "rally" car!!

after seeing pics of the Nissan he is driving, it looks like something he'd be right at home in. hell, it's even got the WRC style wing with the vertical foils. i'm going to be very curious to see if he can finish the event.

Can someone explain the whole premise of the Dakar "rally" to me? Are there different categories/classes/routes/obstacles? I see such a myriad of vehicles...

the basic idea of the Dakar is simple, make it from Paris to Dakar in one piece. the race usually takes the better part of the month, and teams stop for service and sleep every night. there are about a bazillion classes, everything from bikes, to lightly modified cars, to monster long travel offroad racecars (like McRae's ride) and even massive service trucks.

you can get the full lowdown at http://www.dakar.com/2004/us/index.html

oh, i just checked the standings, and it looks like McRae is 11 seconds off the pace in 8th place. considering that they haven't really gotten out of the special stages yet, thats not too bad. it'll be interesting to see how he actaully does in the open desert.

They only do a half hour coverage, but the bikes always seem to be first....heck of a terrain for a bike if you ask me.
