Dakar Rally 2004 thread (warning - spoilers inside)
Here's a thread for discussing happenings on the 2004 edition of the Dakar rally, all 6800-odd miles of it!
As of last night's SPEED coverage, Colin McRae was is 6th overall in the cars, but today's stage is the first proper desert stage, so now we should start to see the men seperated from the boys.

i'm going to be really interested in where Colin is sitting at the end of the first desert stage. i think that the special stages are quite comfortable for him, as they're not that dissimilar from some of the rougher WRC stages. going all day long through the desert however, is going to be something rather new for him. i think if he can keep himself in the top ten after the first open desert day, he'll be in good shape.

all throughout the coverage, SPEED's been airing quotes from Colin comparing the Dakar to Safari. I think he'll be a bit surprised when they get out in the dunes.

the Dakar is kinda like the Safari Rally, supposing that it was run back to back eight times without a break, over even rougher terrain.
anyone betting on when/if Colin crashes out yet?

nah I don't expect Colin to crash out, at least not in the spectacular fashion that we've all come to expect.
In last night's coverage, they showed Colin losing a bit of time due to a navigational misstep in a village (apparently a number of people got slightly lost at that point in the route).
It was fantastic also to see Vladimir Cheguin's Tatra flying over the sand. I love the trucks. They're so hard core it's not even funny.

i haven't quite decided whether or not i think Colin's going to bin it big style. he has a nasty habit of doing that in rally cars, but i have the suspiscion that there is a lot less pressure from Nissan to win the rally, and more to finish it.
and yeah, the trucks are freakin insane. it's the next nuttiest thing to semi racing in australia.

McRae set the third fastest stage time yesterday, on a 350km stage. the only problem he had, along with all the other Nissan trucks, was loosing his rear wing.
