I have a d40 and it came with a 18-55mm lense and a 55-200mm Lense and if you look at my "a day with the clown and the pig" thread, you'll see the quality. I got the body used for 200 with less than 2000 clicks and the lenses weren't too much either. It's a great amateur camera.

The best system I have ever had was still the voice activated one
If you dont need fancy stuff you should look into Youngnuo. I have tried them out and they work well.

I am sure a mod will come along and fix it.
12 posts are on topic the rest is BS
hahahahahaha ok i ususally take everything with a grain of salt anyways.
from what i have read which i am not 100% sure about but some bodies do have an auto focusing motor and some have them in the lenses. like the d90 has the AF in the body and the d40 has the AF in the lens... and by having the AF in the body your lens selection is much better and the lenses are cheaper.
correct me if i am incorrect!!!

I hope the OP has been able to weed out the info from our BS. Basically, equipment is equipment. Going with any of the major 3 brands you'll be fine. Just get something mid-range, and keep your ee out for rebates and used equipment (although I'm not fond of buying used lenses without handling them first).
What is this, BAIC?
