How do you Brake???

You'd think it would be simple, since most of us have been driving for years and have our habits.
I was reading in this months Sport Compact Car and someone wrote in asking this question. It says don't downshift and just use the brakes.
I always downshift and brake at the same time, is it because I'm from the NW and there's so many hills? Or was I taught wrong?
Also check out this link and it says the same..... things that make you go hmmm.

I think it comes down to the fact that replacing brake pads and rotors is cheaper than clutch replacement/transmission repair.

Yes just brake. At least with our skimpy trannys the gears are not ment to take a force from the back of the gear. and constand loading in the different directions will make the gears fatigue.

I think what it was saying in that article is that you shouldn't be using engine braking...
