Can you tell us about getting the computer and wire harness hooked up in the 914?

 

What is the best way to locate an EJ20 motor and about what would you expect to spend?

 

I have a 914 I want to do an STI swap complete with trans. In my opinion the 901 gearbox from the 914 is too weak and unrefined. I have a question for you guys hope someone has specific info. I have acess to a very cheap ej22 eng&trans combo from a 93 Legacy. The question is, are the motor mount and trans mount possitions the same on the early ej22 (1993) and the later year STI (2006). If I build the engine and trans cradle for the Legacy motor to get the car running and diled in, Will I need to modify the cradle when I drop the STI powerplant??? thanks I have a thread with this question you can respond to. Dose anyone know if someone has tried to use an subie engine with subie trans in a 914? Seems to me that this is the logical choice. No need for adapter plates or the use of the very sloppy and weak stock 914 tranny. All you would need is a custom set of axle shafts with 914 cv's outboard and subie cv's inboard. The engine cradle would need to be custom fabricated anyway and the trans mounting should be fairly simple. The only other thing I can think of is the shift cables. Those may need to be custom built, unless you can source them from other vehicle/supplier. If anyone has seen this setup please post. I'm curious if it is easily doable.

 

The 901 tranny should be able to handle up to 300 hp if it is in good condition. It is the same tranny that was used in the early 911's. There are quite a few 914's out there that are running 300-400 hp and I think they are using later 911 tranny's (it's been a long time since I've thought about 914 conversions). You want to make sure you go with a side shift and not the tail shift tranny (post 72).

I had a 914-6 with a 2.5L NA engine that put out over 250 hp. The car was owned by an AF pilot who modified the heck out of the car. With me in the car it weighed a touch over 2000 pounds, had 7's and 8's with fiberglass GT flares. The car screamed.

For all of you gearheads and dreamers here's my work-in-progress for a 914/WRX conversion. I'm also using most of everything that Renegade has. They've been invaluable in this process. I can't imagine trying to do this without their stuff, although some have done it. We're just about ready to poke the engine in. Hope to be done by the end of August or early September. Thinking of making a high-speed road trip to Vegas for S.E.M.A.
