1986 Subaru Leone STi TURBO

1986 Subaru GL-10 Turbo AKA Leone (italiano)

we start of with a stock 1986 Subaru GL-10 FWD TURBO orig 28,000kms 17398.miles. weight is 910kg 2002lb car !!

the parts car for awd and 5x100 86 xt6

so what we have hear is to add the 4WD system into one of these cars, those are 20MM sway bars, above the sway bars is what holds the diff, about that is a mix and match of old and new to hold the STi 6mt, above that is a updated version of control arms to hold the 5x100 knuckle.

rear axle XT6 for the R180 3.900, there is a trick to these where i mix the outer with the new style inners to run a R180. or i could just stay light weight and put a R160 in it.

well Franz has come and gone and it was a busy time while he was here. i had a couple problems that i need to fix to make it work right. so i could not get my dyno time :(

My grocery list !

1... i need to cut vents in the hood because this subaru intake temps are way to hot ! :firedevil:

2... i need to make a safety strap on the drive shaft, also add a little better support on the rear diff so it does not end up on the tarmac !

3.... move my water coolers in a better place

what we have now is a 17psi road tune that to be honest is just crazy to even go to 25psi how fast this car is right now. i am kind of glad i didn't get all the power at once its a tricky car to drive that's for sure.

once i fix the problems then 25psi dyno tune will be done, ill push for the end of the season but no promise its getting late and the car needs to be put away soon.

Franz pictures

so in order to lower my intake temps with out cutting my hood i sacrificed my a/c system :( .

by getting rid of the a/c system i gained just about 20 degrees off the 60 degree iat temp, out side temp is 20 degree.

i just could not cut the hood with out trying the last step, a massive awic cooler (26x7x2). if this does not cool my intake then i am busting the saw out and going to town on the stock hood or the brand new OEM one i have laying around that i picked up for this problem.

so as of now car runs good at 17psi i am a drifter out of control with awd lol. my gas tank sprung a leak do to the vent line sensor not working should have un plugged it like i did for my legacy ! instead it split it self down the side of the tank like a pop can.

a new OEM subaru one is on its way so i can put more then 10bucks in the car and make my way to see Franz and get it tuned on the dyno by the end of this fall weather.

franz made me a new shorter pipe from scratch in a matter of minutes, and he gave me the fancy clamps to hold it right. we also put in oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure sensors to watch whats going and everything is good !

so much went down this week here is some extra pics from the dyno session, the guys at IMA Motorsports know there Porsche's it was Porsche heaven, i was sourounded buy flat six's with huge turbos making stupid power every where i looked such nice people at IMA Motorsports !

here we have it all put together and ready to rock.

made some brackets out of rod aluminum to hold it in place and its working perfect, oil is being seperated and dumped back the right way.

also used my factory coolant reservoir and re mounted it to the strut top with a nice aluminum plate. the AWIC reservoir fits perfect in that little corner and its working perfect.

and also picked up a set of jetta mkII recaro to restore for next year

Nico Leone 02-08-2013 10:08 PM

so i found another recaro seat which this one has the head rest i want. now i just need to find one more seat to match the head rest.

also found a spare set of track wheels for my leone, VOLK RAY's STi GC8. i'm going to paint a set of these some funky bright colour.

and still cant find fabric for my recaro jetta mk2 seats yet

Nico Leone 02-08-2013 10:09 PM

so i got one of my set of STi TE37 VOLK sand blasted ready to get painted a colour that i have not picked yet, i'm thinking a nice glossy jet black but will see soon.

also some oem subaru parts have come in, new XT6 front control arms. i have to problem's that i need fixing with these. 1 is the bushing end rubs in my subframe arm, 2 i dont have camber in the front.

ill be adding something like these to the arms so i gain in both aspects

also i have ordered another rear diff support mount, which i will be adding a new bushing in the middle to help with the flexing in the rear R180 diff. if your driving behind my car, as i shift in a gear ! you can see the diff flex, which all most looks like its going to fall out lol.

Pretty frikin dope, bravo good sir.

I'm really interested in how well the air-water intercooler works for you (and having the BOV built on the tank, awesome idea). Conceptually I've always found it intriguing and it's a rare setup if nothing else.

my friend Franz came up with that idea on mounting the BOV right on the intercooler pretty slick idea for sure. he is also my tuner diebold@autosport and said the awic setup is working just perfect and can handle more which this summer i got a bigger turbo coming... ill be at 400whp with the same setup on his dyno dynamics dyno, should be all right.

i have lots of room under the hood to get a even bigger one if need but i should be ok.
Drop dead gorgeous! How long have you been working on this project?
thank you, i got the car 2 years ago... so last summer i sold my 1993 legacy turbo i built up legacycentral bbs • View topic - Nico's 93 Legacy Turbo... i was going to use the stuff from the Legacy in the Leone but a buddy really wanted so i just sold it.

so this past summer i built the car in 2 months ! i had to wait for parts, if i had all the parts ready to go i could have built in 1 month flat. i only had it out for the end of fall so didnt even get to really drive it that much.

this summer ill bring it to the track and really beat on it to see how she handles feels

think i found my 17" wheels ?????? by my calculator calculations it looks like they will fit. that means i have to get a set of STi Brembos up front.

if they don't fit guess ill have to put them for sale :(

Just an idea here, take your original front seats to an upholstery shop and see if it's worth un-stitching the original fabric and then use that as the center sections (inserts) for one of the sets of Recaro's. The lettered stitching saying "Recaro" is easy enough to replicate.

Then you'd not only have a real set of Recaro's you'd also have a matching set of center inserts.

While not necessarily "Factory Recaro" per-se, if done well and the original seat fabric's in good enough shape, will make for a nicely kitted out interior. I've seen this done only about 6-8 times in my entire life and each time it came out really well. That or if you can find someone in the know, any, and I mean pretty much any woven fabric can either be duplicated or there's even some bolts of original Recaro fabric still in storage somewhere.

i was think of doing this but i didnt want to cut up the only seats left on the plant of this car in that colour. it crossed my mind so many times but i didnt have the heart, they only have 20,000kms on them and are brand new.

i only need the recaros as track seats so i found two nice fabrics to match really well that it will look all right i think.

ill just put the factory seats away and save them for one day when i swap it back to stocki guess
whaaat? this is maaad cool, I bet beaut hauls asss!
its not bad its really quick, tricky to control but very fun. when i add the 400whp turbo it should start to get allot more fun

Nico Leone 02-26-2013 02:18 PM

so this is a rear 1986 Subaru control arm, when adding wide wheels with low offsets like Subaru loves it can rub on the rear arm on this old car.

here you can see how much room i have to play if I put on a 17x7.5JJ ET53 stock subaru wheels that can fit Brembo brakes, also the front is not like this its normal Subaru style up front on this car so any wheel is ok

so what have I come up with ! simple easy is flip the arm around to the other side ! looks like the little Leone can put the rubber down to the ground now, 225/45/17 and i could use STi Brembo brakes now for the extra stopping power.

Hey !!!!! why stop there ???? Lol... lets pull out a STi 22B BBS wheel and see if we can add the monster wheels on the Leone so 235/40/17 17x8.5JJ ET48 even fits !! guess its time to show some people how its done on the track this year !

Trust me, it won't work that way for long. You have the backing nuts put into shear now and they'll separate from the main plate. See if you can use maybe a 4mm-8mm longer set of bolts and put a set of nuts on the outer side to put it all back into strength again. Better yet, cut off the old nuts and make an appropriate spacer with enough surface area to put it back to the same strength.

If ya really want to get fancy make a forward arm that's doglegged so the plate ends up in a similar spot on the tube and doesn't mess with the tracking.

yep thats what i was going to use longer bolts and nuts, i got excited that maybe it could be so simple as this idea.

cutting the nuts off is another good idea, and making a spacer for that. i dont think there is that much stress or flex in that area.

the little arm is used for Toe in Toe out and for camber lol... the old cars sure has some interesting stuff.

right now its just a idea, when the car comes back out will see how well it works in action.

also i think maybe with those wide big wheels i have to watch out for the suspension also, I am sure pushing it to the max now.

What is your opinion on the idea that old forged wheels are dangerous and/or prone to failure due to years of built up material stress?
What is your opinion on the idea that old forged wheels are dangerous and/or prone to failure due to years of built up material stress?
Why would forged be any different than cast or machined? Same stress. When I was researching powder coating I read stories on Porsche forums of guys powder coating forged rims and then competing on them for years. I don't see it as a problem, especially not from a manufacturer like Volk/Rays.

The black TE37s look great on that car! I had LE37s on my previous car.

good thing I have room still for the 4" cone aem filter and set up for this turbo.

I had also changed the vacuum lines for the dual wastegates to hi temp silicone to handle the heat stress in that area.

thanks to Dov@NVauto for my pistons and rods !

i picked this time around the super light weight SA rods from carrillo ! on my turbo legacy i used the very expensive and rugged H beam version. ill try something different with the spare.

just need to paint the lower section white like the original I have put away for safe keeping.
Nice. I'd actually paint it black for a more stealth look, but I do think it will still look good in white as well.
i was thinking of black also but then i would need to find a spare rear bumper to match the front.

maybe ill get two more sets and do a black version

so far this is how i mounted the aim cluster but i think i will change it once my spare cluster comes in from the scrap yards. the flush mount should look much better if it fits.

also from japan ! L'aunsport WRC???????????????????????????????????SPARCO WRC hood vents from GR Subaru model. Eita is a great guy even sent me books on subarus and mesh.

these vents are like subaru america rally car ones with out the hole trim, they have the L shape thing and just cut out.

I would like to thank Franz and his familia for all the hospitality while I was down in the USA !... I had a blast down there and all most didn't want to come home.

here we have Franz's amazing hand crafted one of a kind Leone intercooler piping that fits perfect and does a fantastic job keep the temps down and power up !

my new dash wired up by Franz, this time I can see and keep a eye on everything just in case something is not right.

Franz's Dyno Dynamics tuning tool.... that fan in the back with the red EVO rally bumper on it !!! that thing will suck you in and spit you out the other side if you get to close !..

all sensors hooked up ready to rock and roll the proper way !....

so much eye candy OVER LOAD !

Franz's babys sided by side.... the EVO is just crazy !... its like a full blown race car and has EVERYTHING ! no joke !.. me I like the 86 Golf because I'm from the old school lol.

looks amazing under this Golf's hood !

this car was on the dyno getting all dialed in by Franz... this Porsche has a full blown carbon fiber wide body kit twin turbos and is packing 500hp and 2000lbs.... its freaking fast

this is what the dash looks like with night vision on

so this is my new power level with working oil pump and front mount intercooler set up and the big s300sx FMW turbo on. so 21psi is safe for me, franz could have pumped more boost out but i need to get home to canada again just in case.

old plot with new plot dyno dynamics both on american 93 gas ( Canadian 94 gas will gain a bit more) next will try race gas which will bring the power way up and over the top because I have lots of room to play with... as of now its just insane to keep it all under control while I am on it, so baby steps on my part while driving and my a/c blows nice and cold to keep me calm lol.

so things I need to do are:

maybe bigger rad (brz koyo)
oil cooler
lots of braces, one for the diff and a H brace up front with strut brace.

Nico Leone 09-04-2013 11:12 PM

I went to the track to try my luck and see if it all holds together this past week, after doing one pass on the q-mile and getting kicked off for no helmet ! I managed to pull a 12.6 out.

I know I know my times suck out the box ! I dont want to snap my axles or leave my Diff on the floor ! so I took off bogging in first and not revving out 2nd or 3rd gear becuase the car likes to lay rubber in the rear tires.

I am on the left Porsche 977 twin turbo on right... high boost button used

so after getting kicked off i went lapping to see how well the car handles ! scary move lol.... my brakes are to small or weak so maybe better pads, and the car feels like it needs some wider tires and bracing to help keep it more stable.
Low Boost On was used for lapping its to scary with high lol

as of now its fun to play with till i fix things out

i wish !!! that would be amazing if subaru gave me something, i have owned about 30 subarus now lol

well the season is done for me and I got out on the track a couple times more for fun to test out my new brake pad's, the pad's helped out a bit more but still need more work.

PFC 01 compound group N pad's work well very well, lots of dust but rather stop then not.

I put the 86 Subaru Leone away for the season but next year to do lit will be fun.

wider sticky tires + smaller wheels 15"
Race gas tune 500hp DD it
better suspension stiffer springs
STi oil cooler
BRZ koyo rad install
bigger CV axles

i also was going to swap out my STi Spec-c 6mt 3.900 to my S204 STi 6mt 3.545, but its now in my winter beater (99 Nico). i think my winter beater will be more in need of longer gearing next spring when i do the motor swap.

very excited about this radiator ! its a brand spanking new OEM Subaru 1988 Subaru XT6 2.7L H6 Radiator, its 2 core and also has the proper port size for inlet also outlet as a new EJ motors use.

it's also a perfect match to my EA82T turbo radiator, same size same width same cap location same mount points and also XT6 rad hoses to complete the job.

I wish I new all this from the start of the build, but it sure is going to be sweet next summer on the race track to do more laps in the heat, also the spal fans will bolt up in the same position as the gl-10 turbo mt rad. with the bigger radiator and my oil cooler this should complement the motor very well now.

Nico Leone 01-08-2014 05:39 AM

here is my water pump set up, this pump is for a non turbo Subaru "1990 Subaru Legacy 2.2L NA". There is a couple things special to this water pump which works perfect in my build. The black pipe is coolant heater core pipe single, and the hose adapter is H6 ez30

little back ground on the design

The EJ257 and EJ255 engines are using a low cost stamped impeller water pump that is inferior to this JDM spec closed back cast impeller water pump. The stamped impeller pump is less efficient and more susceptable to cavitation. We suggest installing a closed-impeller pump on any performance or motorsport Subaru engine build

so besides the cast impeller, the inlet port is huge which should help a bit more with coolant flow. on a turbo water pump there is 3 nipple ports... 1 oil cooler... 2 swirl pot... 3 heater core... now because I'm not using a swirl pot and have a rad cap on the rad I can delete that nipple port & the pipe all together.

also my oil cooler has no coolant going into it any more so that port can be deleted also, because of the use of the JDM spec-C S204 adapter.

got lots of parts coming in for my toy very excited to fix the little problems and add some new updated bits to make this car more fun a race track this year.

I found a nice GL-10 Turbo cross member from the local scrap yards had it sand blasted and powder coated black for that long lasting effect. also did the USMB washer weld on trick to re locate the control arms a bit further out so I wont have rubbing binding problems any more with the XT6 control arms.

no they are just sitting there they come off like all new subarus.

So I been collecting parts for my car now do to everything being Super RARE or no longer available (NLA) from Subaru any more.

just in case I bend something or I need to replace something, some of the stuff is still getting sand blasted and powder coated.

front control arms bushings XT6 only white line # W51458. you must melt out the XT6 bushing and re use the shell for this to work.

top corner in Pic is bushing and shell

there rear mustache bar on the older Subaru's also have a bushing that can be replaced with a white line part number # W91379. this part fits on all new Subaru's T bar holding the diff up. to make this bushing work you must burn out your old metal shell that the bolt goes into, then drill out the white line bushing to the same size as the bolt shell.

pic bushings is in center XT6 control arms you can see them.

there will be more bushing's coming to firm up the ride on my car, I need to measure them still and cross fit from a newer Subaru once all stuff comes in.
