2005 CGM STI- Jabberwocky "The Salvage Beast"
Welcome to my member journal!
I've finally gotten some money together so I can start putting decent mods into the car. Since I've decided to go for an AutoX build for the 2011 season, I'm working on suspension upgrades, but also setting up for winter driveability (not possible with previous setup) and adding a bit more power with some engine mods.
Researching into RallyX as well as there is much potential on the roads here in mountainous NC.
11/24-2010- Finally got the winter setup on. Such a B**** to get everything on, but it was nice working on cars again. Should be much easier next time around.
11/30/2010-Got a few things ready to install, and a few things that need to wait till the snow's gone. I'm in no rush as I'm really looking forward to this winter. Should be making a light bar/skid plate later this week
12-11-2010- Light bar and skid plate installed. Getting a good bit of snow tomorrow through early Tuesday. RallyX Build
12-13-2010- Snow has fallen! Have some video footage I'd like to throw together for a nice snow montage. Also planning on a photoshoot with a buddies SLR tomorrow =)
12-20-2010- After a ton of hours got the video footage sloppliy cut together for a music video YouTube - STI- Drifting in the snow
1/5/2010- Nothing too exciting going on right now. There's a lull in the snow and school's been out. Still have some parts to install and need more money for the mods I have in mind.
~Table of Contents~
History- Brief history leading to the purchase of the car
Specifications/Mods- Currently installed modifications
Salvage Damage and Repairs- Damage and issues present at vehicle purchase with images
Jabberwocky?![SIZE=3]- Why the weird name?
Current Dyno Results- Most recent dyno readings
Winter Build- Winter change up and installation
AutoX Build- Solo II setup and information
RallyX Build- Parts wishlist and preparation

History:
The Jabberwocky was purchased in February '10 with help and advice from the members of IWSTI. After a harsh winter in the Appalachian Mtns, I decided that I needed AWD. My Corolla was just not cutting it as my apartment is on the northern face of a mountain. Since I'll be in school for quite a few many more years, I figured a Subaru was a good investment. A next door neighbor had a 2008 2.5i and after a ride along, I was set on getting an Impreza, since Jeep was the only other viable option. I searched within 50 miles and found an '07 2.5i with ~53k for 15k. I was about to buy it after a test drive, but in the process of researching, I found that as a member of the military, I could buy new for factory invoice. This opened up a wider variety of choices for me and I figured if I stretched my wallet, I could even buy a WRX. A few days of research and shopping around I decided it would be better on my wallet due to insurance to just purchased a slightly loved on WRX and started searching further and further away, as there were very few used rexs for sale in my area. Of course, I had seen some STis available, but they were always a few thousand too expensive. In the course of my searching, I found my car. A salvage tag 2005 CGM STi with 4738mi. It was within my price range, but I was apprehensive about buying salvage, and premodded. I corresponded with the dealer and pulled the CARFAX to see what degree damage had been done. Taking my chances, I decided to go for it. The 2 week wait for my car to be shipped from AZ was pretty unbearable, but as soon as it finally came in, I was in love. Because it was salvage, I was expecting the worst as far as body work and engine trouble was concerned, and I was more than willing to put some money in the car to keep it running for years to come. Besides some shoddy body work and wiring, the car is a gem, and is a blast to drive!

Salvage Damage:
After a brief self-inspection and a look over with Steven from 42Autosports I determined the repair work after the wreck was horrible. The brake lines had corrosion and fire damage, the wiring for the radiator was hanging loosely and even touching the engine block. The brake lines are placed horribly and need to be redone. The battery was loose, missing it's bracket, loose coolant reservoir, wiper reservior and break booster. One fan on the radiator was inoperable due to a bad relay. The AC was broken. The grill had broken brackets and sits loosely in its slot. The passenger side quarter panel fits bad, and the wheel well is not flush with the bumper. The hood on the driver's side does not sit flush with the bumper and driver side headlight is loose in it's housing. On the underside, the protective plastic coverings were missing rivets and some were hanging. The rear differential cover was missing. The center console top is missing, probably due to the placement of the Defi Control Unit. The tires were almost bald and dry rotted. 3 were Goodyears of one tread, and a brand new Talon tire on the left rear.A strange vibration is present at high speeds. Turns out my rear diff is crapping out. Oil hadn't been touched since 10/2007 (Car hadn't been driven since then)
Offset Hood
Offset hood from front
Jacked up Bumper
Door gap from quarter panel
Worst dent I have. Hard to see in grey, so I'll probably never fix it.
Brake booster corroded and damaged. Will be replaced soon
Despite the long list of discrepancies, I'm very satisfied with the car. The body work looks like it was hurriedly repaired, but nothing is falling off yet, even at high speeds. A compression test shows the engine healthy. The crappy wiring job was temporarily remedied by zip ties. The AC was recharged with freon. All the plastic fittings were resecured with new rivets. The car was refitted with 4 new tires and oil changed.

Jabberwocky?!
Jabberwocky is the unique name of my 2005 CGM STi that my girlfriend and I accidentally came up with after watching the recent Alice In Wonderland movie. She hopped into it and I WOT'd through the gears and she called it a savage beast. I called it the 'salvage beast', a play on the fact that its a salvage tag.

This dyno run was done at the same time I had the car looked over for issues. I was expecting a bad tune/no tune, but it looks like a Stage 2 tune at this point. The AFR is very conservative and rich. I hope to fix this in the near future.

Also forgot to mention that I purchased a GoPro HD Motorsports to use for the bike and the car. I tried mounting it in a ton of places, on the hood, on the spoiler, in the car, on top and in the grill. Determined that the spoiler is way too shakey for decent pics, although it has the coolest angle. In the car is ok.... and in the front of the gril is awesome!
On top of car.
On the spoiler
In car on windshield
In the front grille
No real decent videos to post yet. No snow on the ground and I can't really get a skid pad going around here. No AutoX's going on either

RallyX Build
So I've been toying with the idea of RallyX along with AutoX and because of the awesome nature of our cars, I don't think it would be too difficult to pull it off. There are a ton of gravel roads around the mountains of NC, even one that looks like Nurburgring (Nurburgring-NC Edition) and I like to sling gravel every now and then. Of course my winter fun would benefit from such a build.
Currently investigating into parts for a decent off roading subie. Because I need lift, I've researched springs that add ride height (sorry can't afford gravel coilovers right now) and have decided on some King Springs that add between 1-2" of lift. You can custom order these with spring rates of your choice from http://get-primitive.com/
I've already picked up the 1" Lift kit from Subtle Solutions, and am very happy with the clearance added.
I need the classic WRC rally car look, so I'm working this week on fabricating a light bar very similar to this one:
With the exception of adding a skid plate to it for a one piece install. Should make for removal/installation a breeze.
I'd also need a good set of gravel/offroad tires and I might as well grab some rims for it too. only issue is for dedicated rally cars, they go with 15" rims and they won't clear brembos. Most go for a smaller brake system, but I'm not forgoing my daily driving for offroad. I'll just pick up a set of steelies and throw some General Grabber AT2s,
12-11-2010- Fabricated the light bar and installed it a few days ago. Finally had some down time to update
Getting the right curve
Top piece welded on.
Almost ready to mount
Installed!
Skid plate underneath
Suspension/Handling:
DIY Light Bar/Skid Plate
Subtle Solutions 1" Lift Kit
Custom King Springs - Researching
General Grabber AT2- Ready to Buy
Rally Rims- Searching for cheap solutions

AutoX Build:
Handling/Suspension Setup
Whiteline Front and Rear Adjustable Sways
Whiteline Anti Lift Kit
RaceComp Engineering Tarmac 2 Coilover 400/500
BBS RE771s wrapped in Continental ExtremeContact DW 245/40/18
Looking into Fender Braces, X Braces and Ladder braces as a supplement to the build, but need to get some real wheel time in.
Setting money aside for the TiC Holy Shift Kit, as well as a rear diff mount for added stiffness and protection.
Predicted class is STM, as most local regions do not strictly follow SCCA regulations
For SCCA events, I'll fall into SM it seems.
Updates will be slow here as the AutoX season is coming to a close.

Over the past week I've been collecting the parts and pieces for my winter build. I have an itching to go play in the snow but with the car as low as it is now, that's impossible. I have my winter wheels and tires (thanks BondSTI!) my springs (thanks coolhandluke!), a set of Group N Strut Mounts, and a Subtle Solutions 1" lift kit (still on it's way, GRRR!)
Yay Boxes!
Winter Set of tires and rims.
Stock springs will do for now.
Group N's to replace the lowering camber plates.
*Joy*
It's all sitting in the spare room until friday when I have time to tear everything down and install. I'm expecting a good 4 inches or so of lift over what I have now and a solid inch over stock. I can't afford taller springs, so any higher than that is out of the question for now. I'm open to any suggestions for added ride height for cheap. I'm not worried about tight cornering for now.
I'll update with tons of pics as I do the actual work, with before and afters.
*11/24* Got everything on the car. Looks bad ***. Can't wait for some snow.
