Potential issues that arise from scoring are pretty standard to lost compression. That's my understanding. Of course, that depends on the scoring. I can't even feel the scoring with my fingernail. But Mert at RBMS is definitely a great engine builder, and very cautious/conservative, so I trust his opinion.
The seller of the engine swears he never saw the scoring, but offered no apology when I asked him about it. I asked him if the machine shop would simply blame him for installing something wrong, and he said yes. That was that.
Buyer beware, I suppose. I should have looked more closely and been more careful/less trusting.
Someone else may be willing to take a chance on this, or buy it off of me for cheaper and rebuild it.
Sorry for the large picture, but I want to be clear what I'm talking about.

yikes! maybe it can be re honed? by the looks of the pic, its deep enough to possible start affecting the skirt over time. its not terrible, but i also wouldnt install it without a couple more sets of eyes. some may say run it, some say re hone, some may say just coat the walls with oil. the more opinions you get, the better. especially with a SB where its the least accessible part of the engine. so if youre going to do it, do it right the first time
other than a light scuff this block is pristine and stand by you regarding Anthony's reputation. great guy and very knowledgeable.

Do you know how the scoring got there. If it happened during the rebuild or if the block had the scoring before the rebuild. Has the cylinders been bored out. Thanks.

Will the sb have to be completely taken apart to repair the scoring or is this something that can be avoided. To me it looks like stress fractures from the sb before the rebuild from either a bad tune, high boost or a weak block to begin with. I'm guessing worst case scenario is the casing has to be replaced with all the internals able to still be used...

According to the original seller, he said it came out of a stock car. At least that's my recollection. I have no idea how it actually happened.
It was honed before I bought it and before it was assembled. The clean cylinder walls everywhere else would testify to that. Whoever did the machining, or the seller who assembled it, both either didn't notice this, or simply didn't do the work they were supposed to do. Very disheartening to spend $2,600 and find the seller didn't catch this, and neither did I.
Per Mert at RBMS, he recommends a full tear down of the short block, bore and re-hone, and 99.75mm pistons. He even mentioned he'd help me sell the 99.5 JE FSR pistons.

Interesting. Might be interested in this short block if Mert has it honed for the next piston size up & reinstalls the rotating assembly. Been looking to do a headgasket job on my build, but maybe instead of throwing my old block in, this would be a better setup.

Lmk what Mert says, and your asking price if he is able to clean up the cylinder wall & get the pistons swapped out, rebalance & clearance checked the setup. If we can work out a fair price and Mert says its salvageable I would seriously buy this.
